It seems that linear games are becoming a rarity. I will be 100% finished with GTA V in a few hours (just need to get the spaceship parts), but that game is absurd with all the requirements that I had to look up just to know what I needed to do. Even when I 100%ed San Andreas several years ago, it wasn't this absurd (and I'll do it again as soon as the OG Xbox version comes to Xbox One). It is simply cookie-cutter material for game design these days.

But besides that, is it too much for devs to make standard linear levels with little to no deviation to them? Watching the Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy makes me want to play it more, and remember the level design exactly as to how I remember them, but it also made me realize that most devs don't want linear games anymore.

It's not a bad thing to want games with one way forward.

I prefer open-world over linear. It's more fun to be able to explore and do the main quest at your leisure.

Open world games give me more gameplay and in turn give me more for my money so I prefer those. With that said not ever game series needs to be open world. Final Fantasy XV and Metal Gear Solid V should have never gone open world for example as the story went to shit because of it and many other reasons.

Not only that but a lot of devs just put generic side missions in the open worlds that are nothing but fetch quests.
Things are improving on that front though with the likes of Horizon and of course The Witcher 3 so perhaps one day those series will be better if they continue being open world.

Games like Uncharted 4 did it right though for that series by having a linear experience with bigger, more open areas. It looks like God of War is doing the same thing. Anything more than that would be odd for those series although I'd imagine that's where they are heading.
