It was well worth it for him. Hell, at the time, I had been helping him get his finances back in order and he's now gone from hemorrhaging money and nearly losing his house to doubling his income and being able to retire over 3 years. He even gives me lessons for free.

It's really not that bad. People can choose to barter if they're something like a lawyer/self-employed. YOU set what's valuable to you.
Perhaps he plans to flip the gun or just really likes it. The only thing that's being paid out of a lawyer's pocket is some gas money and time. They're not really a service that requires much to be paid, it's just important that they're really good or they won't be successful. It's not like a surgeon accepting some guns and a TV as payment.
