The trick, imo, is to ask yourself "what would happen if Superman just speed-blitzed the problem and threw into the sun?" If the answer is "he saves the day", you have a bad Superman story. If the answer is "he makes everythint worse." In the meantime, if I were you, I'd suggest simply reading actual Superman comics. He's currently the star of Superman and Action Comics. The recent Black Dawn storyline has been pretty cool.
