It's was described as a "psychological horror" but it's not. Not even a little bit.

It's a drama. And it's a really good drama. If you liked The Last of Us, you'll love this movie.

Hey that's like how I felt with The Witch. Felt like it hyped me up for a crazy horror movie, and what I got was a really cool movie that I wouldn't really deem as horror. Or at least the horror I thought it was gonna be.

It's funny because it's produced by the same people and the hype around it is "It's this year's The Witch!" which I don't necessarily agree with entirely.

What's really cool in this movie is that you feel uncomfortable for the whole god damn thing (like The Witch), but it's more of a drama with two families trying to co-exist in a world where there's some kind of plague out there. It does a lot of great psychological things and you can probably talk about the subtle details of this movie for hours, because it is crafted so well.

But it is not a horror movie.

Watch this trailer.

You will not be shitting your bitches.

You will just never be comfortable watching this movie. But not like The Witch where you just always have a sense of dread following you from the very start of the film, but just like... everything is so god damn tense and you just watch people make hard decisions the whole movie.

It's got Joel Edgerton, and it's not a horror movie.

How would compare to The Gift then, since I have not seen The Witch as a frame of reference.

EDIT: I've also not seen the trailer or had any interest until this topic.

Well, I don't need to tell you that Joel Edgerton is an incredible actor. He absolutely kills it in this movie.

I'd say The Gift is kind of similar in some ways. The Gift always had me feeling uncomfortable throughout that movie too. It takes a hard look at characters and motivations like this movie does, and you have a difficult time throughout both movies trying to decide whose side you want to be on. You get multiple red flags and false flags in both of these movies too. If you liked The Gift, I could see you liking this.

The thing is, it's a really slow burn, so go with that in mind. This entire movie builds up to the climax of the movie and it does it in a way in which you have no idea how this thing is going to end. And I won't even comment on the actual ending of the movie because, well, it spoils things to even tell you how it makes you feel and it's best going into it totally dry.

I'm definitely going to have to check it out sometime this week. Sounds excellent! And The Witch, too...

I consider The Witch to have enough horror elements in it to be considered horror, honestly. Can dramatic horror be a thing? Because The Witch is that. There are legitimately moments that try to chill you to the bone, and a fair amount succeeds. For instance, the ending and the night scene before that are legitimately scary, which is the intent.

The intent behind It Comes At Night is absolutely not to scare you or anything like that.

I'm one who thinks horror can come in all shapes and forms. Even a sense of uneasiness can be scarier than the typical horror elements. Dramatic horror can most definitely be a thing, and the genre definitely owes itself to that type of horror.

I feel this way too, yet I can't say this was a "great" movie either. I am not really sure what is the mark of a great film; I mean if it's to leave you with unanswered questions and wonder... is that all that hard to accomplish? Does it take a screenwriting master to come up with a question that has no answer? Or several of them? I just don't know. This is why I feel a big disconnect is happening with film these days.

I think horror has a lot to do with certain thematic elements; It Comes at Night definitely has horror elements. The real difference is it's a horror that has no intent on being 'scary.' Which sounds odd, but a lot of classic horrors are the same. You could say it's a drama, but most horrors are simultaneously dramas (unless they're horror comedies).

See, I came out of it in a similar way. I'm going to keep it vague, but I think the true mastery of the film is not just how much there's unanswered questions, but that each question has a convincing answer to either side. Like, if you bring up one side of a question, I could tell you the other side. I think if it were just uninteresting open questions, that's one thing. But he went out of his way to keep you as in the dark as every single character in the movie, and you are just uncomfortable the entire time as a result because these characters are forced to make decisions and you're just not sure at all if it's even the right one, just like all of them. I came out of it a bit disappointed, but then I kept thinking about it and I'm just like... Damn. That's a well-crafted movie.

To me, it never felt like a horror movie despite a few horror elements in it. What classic horrors do yo think have no intent on being scary though?

I mean, there's this thing about making you think and keeping it on your mind that's good, and then there's also the bad side of that. Bad films tend to stick with me too, sometimes they are so bad they leave that sort of impression. A particular one for me is for example Troll in Central Park, by Don Bluth. This is fueled partly by NC's rant watch of it but it was truly abysmal even before I saw that video, and it left me thinking "wow, that was awful". Now this film obviously isn't awful. I think it's extremely well acted, and the mood and tone are great as well. It was really just the script that left me thinking, someone just couldn't think of an ending so here's this instead. Maybe that's not how it happened, but that's the impression it gave me. Within the last 15 minutes of the film, there were 3 different instances I thought it was simply going to roll credits, because that's the sort of movie I was getting it was going to be. I wasn't wrong either.

Again, it isn't bad, but it isn't like this near masterpiece either. I think it's probably getting a fair review from some places, but really skewed ones from elsewhere.

I disagree that they couldn't think of an ending. This entire movie clearly built up to the ending we got, and I'd say what we got was their full intent. It's difficult to discuss why, really, without spoiling it a bit, and I'd rather not spoil anyone. But I would definitely say I felt the opposite about that.
