There was no one moment, I just realized after watching newer ones that they're all boring as fuck and contain none of the wit and absurdity of the early episodes.

I stuck in for a LONG time. I think I made it to around Season 25. Somewhere around the episode with Lady Gaga was the last time I remember watching it new on a regular basis. Once in a while I pop in and watch a new episode on a Sunday like the one this season where they visit Boston, and I am perenially disappointed.

I actually think I found the perfect, defining moment of when it really started heading south though. It's debatable how much the quality wavered between seasons 1-10, but in Season 14, the one episode where Mrs. Krabapple goes to Epcot for a Teacher of the Year Award... There's a scene where they make a joke about Enron, where there's a rollercoaster that looks like a stock chart.
I vaguely remembered the Enron fiasco, I lived through it. But I actually had to stop and think about it, and go "Oh, yeah, that was a thing that happened a while ago..." which is SO fucking unlike what Simpsons humor was for the first decade or so of the series.

I don't quite recall the exact time period I stopped watching, but there was an episode a few years ago I turned in to see, just to see how bad it had got.

It was an episode featuring bart parodying woody Allen as he narrated what happened between him and one of the hillbilly children.

Except unlike woody Allen, it was awkward and not funny in all the wrong ways.

I'm not saying this joke was good but Simpsons made references to random old stuff all the time. Like Homer's weird obsession with the Sherriff Lobo show.

The difference might be that it's either brought up in a conversation or not as obvious as that.

Most simpsons purists pretty comfortably agree that 3-8 are the golden era but 2 and 9 had moments.

Yeah but typically when they made references to pop culture, the joke was set up to be funny, independent of whatever it's referencing. They made parodies and throwbacks funny whether or not you're actually familiar with the source material.

For example:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8oCQXBkD1Fc

In the episode Lisa's Rival, they reference the dam scene from The Fugitive. Yes, you can recognize it as the parody that it is, and that might be funny in and of itself, but the real humor of the joke is coming from the fact that it's Milhouse, especially the "...my glasses..!" line at the end of the scene. You don't need to have seen The Fugitive to laugh at it because Milhouse is a funny character and the delivery is funny.

Jokes like the Enron ride meanwhile, you need to know what Enron was, and remember it was a company that went bankrupt in the early 2000s. Otherwise without that knowledge, you're thinking "Oh, I guess it was something to do with the stock market?"

I agree. I think the biggest issue with modern Simpsons is execution really. A lot of the stuff people complain about them now (celeb cameos, absurd situations, etc) they've been doing since like season 4-5. But the difference there was that the episodes were hilarious. A lot of the modern episodes just feel a bit lazy? Like the joke you're talking about just isn't really that funny in general.

The odd episode I watched in the last couple of years seem better than what it used to be at least.

Yeah honestly they have always done it. The Halloween episode where they use the paintings as a framing device is a spoof of an old TV horror show I'd never heard of for example. I listen to Talking Simpsons and it's surprising how much stuff they actually do reference. But usually they're still funny even if you don't know what it's referencing.

It comes down to the simple fact that the show used to be written much better by more talented writers.

The current writing staff has gotten largely complacent.

Yeah except similar to the Fugitive parody, the joke isn't solely "HEY RECOGNIZE THIS REFERENCE?" With the Ray Jay thing, it goes on for like all of 4 seconds before Lisa remarks "I'm already tired of him." That's the joke, it sounds stupid, or at least Homer is making it sound stupid. Like I said, the newer jokes demand you understand whatever pop culture they're referencing or else it's not funny.

Think of it this way. Each one of these jokes that parody or callback to some pop culture thing,
-Old Simpsons, the punchline was something that happens independently of the reference.
-New Simpsons, the punchline is the reference itself.

It's just a bad joke. The Simpsons were always making jokes about events that happened decades before. Episodes in the 1990s had all kinds of references to TV shows and movies in the 1960s. Practically the entire episode of Homer's Barbershop Quartet was a parody of the Beatles.

Read other posts.

But, I do agree that the delivery was better in the earlier episodes, and definitely made it more funny. I am only disagreeing with the idea that early Simpsons episodes didn't have jokes that were funnier if you understood pop culture and events of decades prior.

I don't know that this was necessarily the point. I think the point was that there were so many different pop culture references before, and even if you didn't understand the pop culture references, you could still enjoy it/find it funny. But that it evolved into jokes where they were very blatantly "this is the joke", rather than being multilayered.

Know what I've kinda noticed about The Simpsons in general over the last twenty seasons? The show is like, frequently sympathetic towards smokers/cigarettes.

Like, there's a lot of characters that smoke on screen (which in and of itself is a rarity these days) and it's not really often done as a gag to show them in a negative light. And then there's even an episode where Patty and Selma are staying with Marge, but they're not allowed to smoke. Weirdly, Homer trying to bust them for not controlling their smoke cravings, was portrayed as the bad guy.
Plus there's that whole episode about Lisa taking up smoking to be good at ballet, and besides the ending, the majority of the episode makes smoking look pretty cool and useful.

Just something I was thinking about recently while watching some newer eps.
