I know you're "supposed" to go knock on their door and politely ask them to turn it down, you need to sleep, etc... But if they're inconsiderate enough to blast music that much late at night, if anything that will just make things worse.

One thing I found last time it was an issue that works well and is more fun than simply banging on the floor is to get some martial arts practice in (Capoeira, specifically). Living in an apartment, I can't really do that normally b/c I'm a considerate person. But when the people below me were being assholes...I was doing spin kicks and cartwheels and such and having a blast. They turned the music off after about 5 min, well before I could finish my workout and never blasted their music again :(

That's right. I didn't tell my neighbors either for the same reason: making things worse. They might get mad and turn the music up louder. There is also the security issue. They may get violent, and you will end up getting hurt. I usually called the security.

Even beyond those immediate issues, once you talk face to face about it...showing it annoys you especially ("no one else in the apartment felt the need to knock on our door") means that if you eventually *do* have to call the cops that time or any later time...or even if someone else in the apartment does it...guess who they'll immediately suspect "snitched" on them? Now you've got a neighbor w/ a vendetta against you. A completely bs one, granted, but it being unjustified won't un-puncture your car tire or whatever other shit they do to make your life hell.

Really, it's better to just anonymously call the police and leave it at that. Chances are you're not dealing w/ reasonable people, and the risk vs. reward aspect is pretty skewed.

I give a bit of leeway if it's a party or something but anything other than that is irksome. I just retaliate by playing my music loud when I know they probably will be sleeping. It gives me some satisfaction knowing I've pissed them off too.
