smart move tbh. Society needs to shift from equality to equity. a $100 traffic ticket could be a week's worth of food for a poor household, but chump change for a wealthy person.

Good point.

If I made $100K a year, I'd wouldn't bat two eye lashes at paying a $100 fine for speeding. Conversely, when I was pulling in $500 a week, which is about $25K a year, getting hit with a random $100 bill on top of my other bills stung. I definitely wouldn't want to inconvenience myself that much trying to get somewhere 2 minutes faster.

So I agree with this, it's not a punishment you'd be weary of if you have the money to laugh it off.

After reading the article and one of the bills this looks like the fines will be the same, but if someone's income is low the fine cannot exceed 5% of their monthly income.

I don't see anything about the rich paying more because they make more. This is just to prevent poor people from having their licenses suspended.

When I was poor I never sped or broke any traffic laws. I figured out my ideal speed to maximize mpg and I never exceeded that speed. I was very cautious too I knew I could not afford a new car if I got into an accident.
Honestly if you are speeding you are probably not poor because you have a lot of money to waste on gas.
Traffic laws exist for a reson not only to protect the individual but the other people on the road with the individual. If you are so reckless and callous as to put other people lives in danger you deserve a hefty fine. I feel the fines are too lenient as it is and now they want to lower them.
This isn't an issue about being poor it is an issue about putting lives in danger.

Uh, not a lot actually. They already have records for that stuff. At most they'd have to add a program (or add to the existing ones that police use in their vehicles) to allow them to search that information on the go

If you really want to help the poor, eliminate "court costs" and mandatory surcharges as a concept.
There's no reason whatsoever that a $35 ticket should end up costing $180, even when mailed in.

Doesn't proportional fines to income break the whole concept of "a punishment fitting the crime?" The whole idea of a $100 ticket is someone somewhere determined that cost as what was fair for the crime. If one person gets a $100 ticket and another person gets a $10,000 ticket for the same thing, not only does that destroy the whole "equality" thing, and brings up a question of whether the latter is cruel/unusual punishment, but we now need to consider whether that $10k ticket, in isolation, is fitting for the crime.
