From here on out, I am no longer going to frequent GoodReads.com

I've had way too many people reveal the ending on there.

I stopped 1984 midway through because someone gave the ending away.

And the only book I ever used Sparknotes for was Portrait of a Lady. The professor more or less gave away that she ended up with the wrong guy, so there was no point for further active reading.

Anyway, you must read that book. You're doing yourself a disservice for not finishing it.

I really should go back and finish it.

I stopped shortly after Winston and Julia met for the first time.

in a world of vr, films, video games where you can create anything, do I care to elaborate? no I guess not. it's not like any of those things could replace books in every way.

This.

I think it's absolutely sad that some people actually harbor the belief that books are now redundant.

Books immerse you in ways that film or video games cannot.

Ah, I see.

That said, as much as I love 1984, the middle part of the novel (you're almost there) is incredibly tedious. It's basically a history lesson that drags on and on. I think that's why most people stop reading 1984.

Yusiko, you're an avowed YA fan, and yet you haven't read Six of Crows yet?

Blasphemy.

Mistborn trilogy? I'll download it on my tablet and read it soon. You're not the only person pestering me to read it; my boyfriend, family, and friends are always trying to get me into it too, lol.

Anything by Brandon Sanderson is god-tier. He's my favorite author.

Also nice to see someone else on here that appreciates Six of Crows. Read the sequel?

VR and games can do everything a book can. the writing needs to improve but that's it. it will surpass the immersion of a book in every way.

There's a bisexual guy (Jesper) and a gay guy (Wylan).

These are all six characters:

I'm going to have to disagree.

You're in the character's shoes when reading a novel the entire time. You know their innermost thoughts and assimilate their experiences and worldviews.

Video games? You're playing a game while getting a few cutscenes interspersed here and there, which can only convey so much information.

That's not to say they don't have their own flaws.

Being described everything and having to mentally create the world yourself is often (to me) very unimmersive. It's also kind of annoying and stressful when you constantly have to update your mental image of how this environment lays out with a constant stream of new information.

Books excel in depth of dialogue/storytelling, but nothing else really. Convenience and ease of production too, I guess.

I concur.

Unlike video games, books aren't concerned with gameplay. Thus, the writer can focus entirely on the story and the characters.

With games, I concede that you're better immersed visually. But that's really it.

It goes deeper than just visual/audible immersion. You are physically (well, digitally) interacting with the world.

if you dont find books the most immersive its honestly just a problem with you rather than the medium
nothing is more immersive than a book and your mind creating the world inside your head

While that's true, is that edifying compared to literature? I don't think so.

If we're talking about personal enrichment and knowledge, I don't think video games can even hold a candle to books. As I said above, with video games there is so much emphasis on the gameplay. Oftentimes, the story and more is secondary.
