Current Events > How do you deal with someone addicted to a certain recreational substance?

Really I just feel like blowing off some steam and it's a wall o' text.
My brother is a fuck. I have no other way to describe him. 26 years. He's got a massive addicted personality, self centered, spoiled, persecution complex. He's wanted there to be something medically wrong with him since he was a teen. Depression. Hated everyone because his life's perceived failings are it's everyone else's fault. You name it. Got punched in the face and had an ipod stoled like a decade ago when he walked off into the lonely streets after he couldn't stand being at a family party with us. Deserved it. God did he deserve it.
Ever since then he's claimed now he has PTSD, he's depressed and so on. Talked my mother into taking him to a shrink. "It's ok. It is in fact everyone else's fault you think your life is shit." That's what he got out of that. Well in the last couple of years he somehow got some quack to prescribe him medical *you know what* (I don't know if we can type it out on this site).
Now he has to be high 24/7. Comes home from working weekends only at a pet shop to get high. Oh but he draws cartoon porn and sells it online too. Wake up, get high. Gets high before bed.
Now a lot of this is my mother's fault as she let's this 26yo ass do this in her house and doesn't kick him out. Plus he's got his "medicine man" who looks like a heroine fiend in a broken down car that comes to my mother's house to bring it to him.

It's gotten to the point now where he insisted he can't go the 6 hours of out brother's hs graduation and the after family party at my house without smoking again. So my mother said well take it to your brother's house and go smoke in the back yard. Well fuck no he isn't. I just snapped. I lost it and yelled at both of them.
I'm not saying it's addictive. I don't have any problem when it's treated like a drink and people do it every once in a while.
But damn. I don't want him smoking it in front of extended family at my house. I don't people smelling it.
You know, fuck. He can't go 6 hours without it. The little bastard. And then there's a family trip being planned and I told him too. I'll be damned if you're bringing that along to smoke every time we make a pit stop in another state. Just ugh!

I hope you guys find some way to come to an understanding. Try to meet in the middle with him, you gotta understand that everyone processes things differently but if that really is his outlook on life then he does either need some tough love or to go to more counseling or something.

I'm a recovering drug addict and to miss a sibling's graduation over MARIJUANA makes no ****ing sense to me. Yeah when you do it a lot it sucks to not be stoned sometimes but it's not like he's dopesick going through heroin or benzo withdrawals. He needs to man the **** up, but if that doesn't happen just tell him to not be so stupid and go buy some edibles if he insists on being lifted all throughout your guys' family functions.

Well the only response he gave tonight was that, and I quote "I don't give a rat's ass what anyone in this family thinks."

And I know it's not the drug's doing. It's him. It's his attitude or mentality. And I feel like punching him in the face myself. He can't go to our brother's graduation and party because he has to get high. God that just doesn't compute in my mind. It just makes me angry.

Thanks. I hope there's a middle ground but knowing him it's either he has to have it every 3 hours or whatever, or he's having a childish fit and staying in his room to draw porn or play the latest shooter.

And yes, some of you are right. He is exactly the horrible cliche you think of when you think of a stoned loser into nothing but pity parties, porn, drugs and video games.

This is going to be a bit hard to come to terms with but you need to consider this: if there was nothing wrong with your brother and he was of a sound, stable mind - why isn't he more like you? Listen guy, people are different. Some people don't achieve the levels of personal success that others do. Also you're underestimating the marijuana, it doesn't produce biological withdrawal however the side effects of mental dependency are real and nasty. I'm shocked he got prescribed that for depression, is that common? I wouldn't know not being from America.

I think you should just try and let it go, look at all the hatred in your heart. Pity him instead if you have to but honestly you sound like you're stressing people out and making a bad atmosphere.

Marijuana probably isn't helping, but I doubt it's the root cause. Willing to bet, take away the weed only and he'll just turn to some other drug or addiction to escape. And some states are pretty generous to give out medicinal marijuana. I live in California, and as long as I got like $60 I can walk into a clinic, say I'm depressed or have chronic pain, and get my card right then and there. Doctors don't give a fuck.

And a bad atmosphere? This has been going on for years without anyone saying anything. That house smells like a high school bathroom with the smoke in it. We have my youngest brother who couldn't be more different and better off thank god is living in there and is a minor. My mother doesn't put a stop to it. That "dealer" of his that comes inside. My mother who wants to just ignore it all obviously doesn't do squat to stop it.

But I'm creating a bad atmosphere finally calling them out on this?

Have a nonjudgmental conversation with him and see if you can't bring him to talk about what is actually going on in his head. At some level, he probably doesn't know how to work past his problems and chooses the escapism of weed and/or simply ignores it.

The escapism of blaming the world for his problem is definitely something that has to be broken, but you have to do your part of cultivating some trust and accepting him and his flaws, without accepting his flaws.

Its an excuse. Real drugs basically stop your body from producing its own dopamine so you NEED the drug to keep your chemistry stable.

See I don't blame the drug. It's him. He needs a crutch. Something he can't live without because his life is so fucked up it helps him. It's all in his head. He's always been this way, he's always wanted to get drugs. Only this is the extreme where he's not going to take part unless we let him do his drugs in my house, in the parking lot, on a trip. like an ultimatum. You want me there? Then you have to accept and let me do my drugs. And if you don't then it's your fault I wasn't there.

I need a therapist so he can give me anti depressants.
I need to see a doctor so he can give me anti anxiety meds.
He tried drinking for a while too but the little snot can't handle even one beer and ends up crying in front of everyone.
