This contest is using North American release dates for each game.

I assumed that would be the case, but I just find that a bit strange personally. I feel like it should go by when the game was first released, but that's just me.

Some people have thought the same, but GameFAQs is a U.S. site and well over half the voters are from America. Going by anything other U.S. dates might just confuse most of the voters.

There are exceptions of course, such as when there is such a significant gap between releases.

Ie, should Mother 3 ever see a stateside release, it will surely still be listed as a 2006 game and not the U.S. year.

Phoenix Wright being classified as a 2005 game disagrees with you.

Except that was a 2005 game. One that was largely a remake of a 2001 game, mind you, but the two did have slightly different titles in Japanese. Since you bring up Mother 3, probably the best example available for North American gamers would be the original Mother, finally released as "Earthbound Beginnings" in 2015. And it probably would be classified as such. (See also the remakes of the first two Fire Emblem games). For European gamers, though, there's a far better example, which likewise had mild changes for the first version that they received: Chrono Trigger. To Japanese and American gamers alike, that's a 1995 SNES game, but the first version Europeans ever received was Chrono Trigger DS in 2009. And there are differences between the versions.

Granted, this site has never allowed remakes to be taken as their own entities even when there are far more significant changes to the point that they're hardly even the same game (most notably the Pokémon main series remakes), so take that as you will.

The GBA version never came out in the west.

The ds version is an enhanced port which came out in Japan an is the same year I believe

But yeah it would be stupid to include Jpn release dates because in the 90's the dates are all over the place.

Just keep it consistent. I live in Europe. I didn't play a lot of these games in the year they came out in Us. But I have to just group them in that year. Melee and Ffx came out in 2002 in Europe. But I have to just accept them as 2001 games. Otherwise it becomes confusing. I know for me personally the actual year of 2001 I did nothing but play dark cloud and golden sun. But that's the year all of these games came out in the Us so I just take my experience with them and accept them as 2001 games even if I played them in 2002.

Yeah true. But certain remakes should have a pass. Resident evil REmake for example should be its own game. It's a completely different experience to the first.

Mother 3 has also been in GameFAQs brackets before, listed as a 2006 release. I doubt they wouldn't just want to keep that consistent, especially given most people who want to play the game have played a fan translation at this point.

But then again Aeris/Aerith so who knows.
