Do you leave a tip for your barista?

Everytime I go to starbucks through the drive through I see the tip jar in the window and get pissed off. I dont understand why there seems to be an expectation among people that this be a thing.

Ive been to coffee shops enough to know that the difference between that barista and the person working at mcdonalds is that the barista makes more money. Thats about it. So the implication that I should leave a tip when they are already making an okay amount of money is beyond me.

In my mind the only people you should tip are:

1. Anyone making less than minimum wage in the service industry where the norm is to have the bulk of their pay come from tips. This means bartenders and waiters/waitresses. Not the guy working at mcdonalds, not the guy rolling my burrito at chipotle, and not my fucking barista.

2. Barbers (assuming they make more than minimum wage? no clue) because if I am having this person cut my hair once a month and have to make conversation with them for 25 minutes I sure as shit want to be in their good graces.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Because people who pay with cash often get change and by having the tip jar there it's an easy incentive. I don't generally do it but its the same concept as tipping a bartender if maybe the person at star bucks does some cool combo drink for you.

Waiters, waitresses and bartenders make less than minimum wage. The restaurant makes a decision to not pay the person to drive costs down with the expectation that customers will pay the difference. Baristas do not fall in this category and therefore should not receive a tip.

Bartenders make less than minimum wage though

Actually bartenders on average make a little over 10 bucks an hour, although some states don't require them to make minimum wage.

This isn't anything to get mad at over, just don't tip. I have never gotten any sass over not tipping them.

You're not expected to tip at somewhere like Starbucks as you are other places, though. It's just there for if you feel like it or have loose change. And more goes into making a drink at Starbucks than most other fast food places.

but the person is still paid an appropriate amount of money. they are still a cashier/fast casual (at best) restaurant employee with an above minimum wage pay.

Basically this. I don't tip at tip jars, but I don't mind them being there. If someone is feeling generous then they can go for it.

It does have a psychological effect, though. It makes me uncomfortable not to tip when the option is clearly there.

I often buy food from food carts, and if it's a busy time, then I'll be waiting in line, and people will be tipping on their food - and it does make me feel cheap for not tipping. I never tip less than 20% at actual sit-down restaurants, but I hate the sense of expectation created.

Don't really go to Starbucks, though I can't imagine tipping there since I'd pay with credit card.

Really because the thing that annoys me the most about Starbucks is their ridiculous size names. Seriously, this is me.

What's mildly annoying is fast food/food carts where you pay via tablet, and you have to select an option of "x% tip" or "no tip"

I habitually ignore tip jars, but actually selecting "no tip" makes me feel a bit cheap.

Yea I don't really tip at Starbucks or places like that but I have no problem with it being there. Occasionally I'll leave something.

Well also I usually just get grande so it's easy to just say. Occasionally I'll get Venti but still don't mind the names.

Yeah I bounce between the Starbucks names and just saying large and no one acts like they don't know what that is. That's dumb.

I mean, this whole topic is predicated on pettiness. But I'm obviously not alone in this. I'm not thrilled that businesses do this, but making people uncomfortable is an effective way to make money, so I obviously see why they do it.

Stores in my old neighborhood actually banned tip jars for their minimum and low wage workers for this reason

Enough customers complained that they didn't let you give tips any more. I guess someday you can hope to accomplish this in your own community.

If you're at Starbucks or some other places (like sandwich shops) and you ask for some real complicated custom order then you damn well better leave a tip for decency.

Also, I leave tips in jars at shops I frequent when the holidays come around. It's just a way to say thanks for the service over the year.
