Officially became an unconditional permanent resident on May 23, 2007. So this topic is just short of that mark. Feels like a long time ago (if not a lifetime) but 10 years, wow, that's a while. It took a long time and a lot of money. I remember how happy I was that I'd be able to work and participate in society.

I'm glad to not be in America at this time. This is after most of my time in the US was under GWB and his policies. When the status fully expires at the end of this month I'll feel a little bummed that I didn't relocate to Portland or Seattle but I would not want to be an immigrant in the US at this time. Even a really white one. Sadly I probably won't be going back to visit friends again any time soon.

AMA if you'd like

What's your social security number?

I still remember it!

It starts with a 6

Actually it is 680 and apparently Nevada is one of the only states to only have one 3 digit prefix. Not a lot of SSN issued there. So every Nevada SSN starts with 680. Wyoming is another state like that and so is New Mexico.

Hmm!

Corrected that info

Did you at least visit a bunch of states while you were here? Even to most (rational) Americans Nevada is a shit hole so if that is your entire experience then it is kind of limited.

Where I live (upstate NY) is probably the most Canadian place in the country next to Minnesota. We even have like 20 Tim Horton's and a dozen or so Poutine places.

I got to see stuff on the west coast. I've seen some of California and Oregon mostly. Things in the inter mountain west. Haven't been out east, but that's also true in Canada. I've been to Ottawa but not Toronto or much of the east.

If I had more money at that time I would have loved to see more of the US.

Yeah, people say it because DIA is actually really far northeast of Denver and there's basically nothing of note in Colorado further to the east of the airport

What do you mean when the status fully expires? Does that mean your citizenship lapses? That's odd if it's considered permanent.

No, permanent resident status is not the same as citizenship. I would have needed to pay fees, pass an exam, and swear in my loyalty to become a US citizen.

PR status is temporary and usually exists to allow you the time to become a citizen. For me I was granted 10 years of it. If you have conditions on your status it's shorter. Though you can just renew your PR status.

Why you may want to be a citizen : you can vote, get a passport, and collect benefits. I paid taxes but couldn't get any kind of government assistance if I wanted it and could not vote on anything.

Where I live now is way worse. Other places I've lived in Canada have been great for food. Some places I've traveled to in the US have amazing foodscapes and others have very little.

I will say the US has cheaper food in much larger portions in general

Well if I understand correctly you can maintain that status indefinitely if you meet the conditions for it. Most people want to use it to become citizens. It has been a while since I went through all of the hoops.

I can understand why people don't want to do it legally if they do not intend to live in the US forever. You're constantly being watched, have to carry your PR (green) card on you at all times, must pay taxes and not collect benefits, and can be deported for a huge number of reasons. On top of all of the filing fees, appointments, and interviews. Like you're in the guillotine all the time instead of off the radar.

Regarding the becoming a PR : no, if I was going to be in the US if was the only smart thing to do. It was neat to get to live elsewhere and check out the US but I don't think I'd want to live there forever. At least not until they get their health care nonsense sorted out

If I made more money in Canada I would be upset. As a US PR or citizen you have to file taxes with the US even if you don't live there any more and you have to pay taxes to the US government on your income even if it's totally foreign.

That's a ridiculous policy

We're one of the only 1st world countries to do so as well. And people thought millionaires were just being complainers about not paying their fair share when they renounced citizenship. They literally were being taxed 110% of their income living in another country being an American citizen.

No it's not exactly like that. Any taxes you pay in the country of residence count as credits towards the tax you would owe with the same income in the US. If you pay more than the US would have taxed you then you don't pay the full US tax, and in many cases you don't have to pay at all. You're not being taxed at 110% of income.

But you do have to report all of the income and that's where some people take issue

It might depend on the country, because it very much does happen. There were a slew of celebrities bringing it up in previous years.

Or I could be wrong and remember wrong. In any case, still stupid to pay taxes to a country when the money wasn't made there.

They're certainly paying tax to two countries and it may add up to be a lot but they shouldn't be at a tax rate above their total income. They may be getting taxed on other sources like property sales.

America has some good eating opportunities (Americans do love to eat) but not everywhere in the US is great and what kind of food you can get varies a lot based on your location and the size of the city

For big coastal cities there are lots of offerings yeah

America is champ for barbecue for sure

But the cuisine from around the world is often heavily Americanized
