The 46% are CRAZY.

2001 is an incredible year in gaming. The final has to be between 1998 and 2001.

Just look at this list:

http://www.metacritic.com/browse/games/score/metascore/year/all/filtered?year_selected=2001

Come on, people.

Add in Metal Gear Solid 2 or Devil May Cry in place of Silent Hill 2 and I think it widens the gap a bit more.

MGS2 and/or DMC needs to be represented IMO for 2001 to have a chance in the next rounds.

Melee and FFX are great. But these could give it the edge.

Sephiroth win Villains
Link win Characters
Zelda beat FF in the finals of series with the most votes ever on gamefaqs
ocarina of time win best game ever

there are a shitload of other websites that enjoy and play modern games. they have no need to come to gamefaqs dot com. they are catered to everywhere else on the internet, between youtube and twitch and reddit and 4chan and anywhere else you can talk about games. this is primarily a website for text based walkthroughs and the video games they are useful for - and a site that was built off the success of and desire for walkthroughs for final fantasy vii. i will never understand how this is a difficult concept for people.

I have used gamefaqs for 20 years for FAQs. I mainly dabble in just the game I'm playing and the board for that game. Is it such a hard concept to understand that someone using this site for that purpose and not the bigger meta of the core community is surprised to discover everyone one this website hates games since the PSone era? There is a reason I have been a member since 2005 and only a veteran level. I haven't posted much in the forums.

People constantly bringing up individual games as a reason for why gaming is "still" good is all a product of the Casual Revolution of 2007. Due to social media and the centralized internet, gaming (like most other things) are in massive episodic waves of what the world is buzzing about. "OMG have you played Bloodborne!" in a few months becomes "OMG have you played Witcher 3!", with a couple of fun but primitive indie titles sandwiched in between.

Before 2007 gaming was a cohesive unit. You played games. There were consoles, PC games, genres were well represented on a year to year basis. One month you were playing a 13 year old game, the next month it was a brand new game. You didnt care about needing to be in the current episode/flavor of the half year AAA big budget cinematic shit, you just gamed. Now people dont play video games anymore for the sake of playing. They do it because they want to feel like they are in the current episode of what the centralized internet has a dumb hard on for. Nobody will give a fuck about Tales of Vesperia in 5 years. Hell nobody does already. The Last of Us? Already pretty much forgotten and everyone has moved on. This is why gaming is shit since 2007, and why the centralized internet is fucking stupid and ruining us all. Fuck the Casual Revolution of 2007.

Ha I am in agreement Social Media is destroying our lives and people are caught up too much keeping up with the Jones. I wouldn't say games suck now but the media covering it sucks. Everyone has allowed themselves to get caught up in the marketing machine and allow the newest and hype to dominate substance.

I could care less if people forget The Last of Us because I won't, that game was an incredible storytelling experience.

It's all bias and opinion. It's all preference. Youngin's will most likely vote halo or Smash bros all day while the older of us will vote for the classics, since it's what we grew up with.
while 95 has alot more good titles in my opinion. there are a few select titles in 2001 worthy of note, such as Silent Hill 2 & RTCW

But the RPG lineup of 95, for me, can't be beat. The introduction of RTS games to the public with the more readily accessible Command & Conquer, over the more obscure (at the time, at least in my region, until it picked up in popularity quite some time later) WarCraft 2.

And the amount of black sheep in each lineup is heavily in '95s favor. FF X is one of my least liked FF titles for one, and I grew out of the nintendo fanbase by that time and couldn't be bothered by all it's weirdness. Not as an edge lord late teen at the time anyway, so a lot of game cube stuff is wasted for me. like pikmin and Mario party.

Gaming didn't die or whatever or decline with 2007. There's stuff for everyone still. You have your mainstays, you have a bunch of sweet online games, and you have an explosion of indie devs churning out fantastic stuff. I mean shit, Bastion, FTL, Hotline Miami, Risk of Rain, Dustforce and The Swapper are easily in my top 20 or whatever favorite games ever but I know full well not to expect widespread representation. There are always going to be good games even if there is a crazh which decimates big companies.
