Odds of Jeff Zero actually playing to the end of Symphonia this year?

Twin Peaks' 1991 ending promised an eventual continuation. Captain Archer's final words in the series finale of Star Trek: Enterprise promised us Discovery. There's even a Battlefront game with a campaign on the horizon. The point is, nothing ever truly dies. It just goes into stasis. A hyperbolic time chamber, there to rest, regain, and continue.

[JZLF returns to Adult Swim's award-winning late-night anime block tonight.]

What's on the docket, you ask? Let's begin with the definite.

Steins;Gate: The Movie - Load Region of Déjà Vu is starting -- and ending -- tonight. Leon's watched it; I haven't. First episode of anime I'll be seeing since December! I'm looking forward to it.

Attack on Titan fires up with its second season shortly and we'll simulcast it once we're caught-up. I think there are six or seven episodes to check out as of this typing? Maybe? Leon ended up taking to the first season notably more than I'd anticipated, so that's cool. Those OVAs were solid, too!

Kanon was made by the same folks who did Clannad so you can bet your bottom dollar I'll be wanting to hop into this. Surprise hit of 2016 for me, that show.

Mass Effect Andromeda is a video game from Emmy award-winning musical group BioWare with a company all-time low Metacritic score of 70. Yet Leon is digging it a good bit, as are a ton of folks elsewhere on the net. It sounds a lot like what I figured it'd be: Mass Effect: Inquisition. He's almost done with it. I'll be starting it up sometime soonish.

Persona 5 is a video game from Oscar-nominated savior Kazumi Kaneko. I might surprise the world by starting this first. Leon hasn't begun his latest journey to Japan because of the aforementioned debut album from Andromeda.

Eureka Seven is the most enjoyable thing I ever watched while simultaneously having little to no idea what the heck was happening. Leon concurs. We'll dive back in wherever we left off.

Tales of Symphonia is... getting restarted. <_<;

And what about the possible entries? Sure, I can think of a few.

Working!! has two exclamation marks and Leon says it's funny.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood should prove interesting one way or the other because Leon dropped the original FMA. He couldn't get into it. As someone who doesn't much care for the original, I can't say as I blame him, but the million-dollar question is, will he like Brotherhood more?

Ghost in the Shell: Standalone Complex is a show with a second season I never watched. Cooper Midnight gracefully bowed out from seeing it because he found the first season too dry. I could see Leon agreeing with him, but also potentially enjoying it. So I'll head back to the beginning and we'll give it a try together at some point -- maybe.

Psycho-Pass. Funny name. Serious sandwich.

also after watching the Steins;Gate movie, Kurisu is going to be tough to beat on the new and improved Waifu Rankings 2.0

My luggage may have gotten irreparably lost mid-transit courtesy of the Greyhound station in Omaha being terrible. If it has, I will have no way to play that game for right now. If it hasn't, I'll definitely get it soon. But I didn't want to even mention it because I'm in ;_; mode over that debacle. (They'll reimburse me somewhat if that happened, at least. I dunno the details on that front. Hoping it arrives at local station.)

That old laptop would require copious, copious repair work before it could even fetch a hundred bucks. It has more problems than I can count. Putting it in the main bag was a mistake, but not a tenth so vast a mistake as it might sound. I'm more irked at the potential loss of clothes, really, but they'll do a partial reimbursement on that stuff if it doesn't turn up.

So uh. I started Persona 5 today. I'm gonna go ahead and record sporadic thoughts in this topic rather than doing a separate thread for it, because hey, JZLF is back. That said, it does make things a bit more challenging, because we'll want to avoid spoiling Leon. He's been a Persona diehard for a lot longer than I have, after all, but he's still working on Andromeda. So let's all agree to make CIA-level usage of spoiler tags for all P5 discussion, shall we? Many thanks.

We begin with...

...a flashy anime cutscene that makes me grin from ear to ear, including our hero (who I have named Akira Kurusu as per the manga) recalling Cowboy Bebop choreography to a tee when he falls through stained glass to the ground below. Unfortunately for Akira, rather than nearly dying like Spike Spiegel, he is instead apprehended by a flock of police officers so vast you'd think Japan were at war. Some shenanigans ensue, and six punches and a kick to the head later, Akira-kun meets Dragon Age's Cassandra Pentaghast, who decides Persona 5 needs a framing device. She asks Akira to tell her everything he knows about the mage uprising in Kirkwall, and also, the Phantom Thieves.

We quickly learn Akira-kun got a raw deal in life because he stood up for a woman who was being forced-upon. As someone with a raw deal growing up (it's basically become a Board 8 meme; you know it, I know it, we all know it) I can empathize with hard-luck heroes. Also, I'm a hero, too, and that's why they call me "Jeff Hero."

So Akira Toriyama begins to tell his tale, albeit silently. He's taken in by a guy whose name escapes me, but I'll remember it soon. He owns a cafe. Let's call him... Master Oshi for now. Master Oshi for now gives Akira-class starship (it's a real thing in Star Trek, yo) a cold shoulder and claims he's only doing this for money, but we'll see how that holds up. Master Oshi for now also sells curry and coffee, two of my absolute favorite things in life. Perhaps my two very favorite ingestibles in the world. Anyway, we meet the principal and a teacher whose avatar makes her appear permanently withdrawn from life. Then again, it seems that's bog-standard for everyone in this district.

There's also a guy who runs the volleyball team, and he's a jerk, and we learn this because Akira and a kid named Ryuji wind up transported to a castle where he's dressed like the Burger King. No, no, you know, the Burger King. I never knew the Burger King wore naught but pink underwear beneath his robe, but I suspected. Just when the two misfits are sentenced to death, Akira's glasses break and a mask gets stuck to his face and his eyes turn to blood and I begin to wonder if the Boltons are here but wait -- wait! -- he's OK, he's fine, this is fine, situation normal, how are you? And a Persona appears and it looks like Las Vegas and they win.

We explore the castle and meet a talking cat and I've played a few JRPGs in my time so this barely fazes me and we escape and return to reality and the teacher is like "ugh" and Akira-kun is like "....." and she introduces him to the class and there's a rumor that this blonde chick is dating the weird creep guy whose name is Kamoshida. She mutters "lies" underneath her breath like she's Amy Lee circa 2001. I'd note that this girl can't be any older than 18 and the dude is probably like 30, but this is Japan, land of the free, home of the things that make me uncomfortable.

At some henceforth-unmentioned point, Igor appeared, too, and he is now Samuel L. Jackson.

Attack on Titan came roaring back to our airwaves tonight after a four-year absence for some, a six-month hiatus for others. Spoilers: the first two episodes were really good. Fuller disclosure: heck yeah, Sasha episode. I'm with Leon; she's great. You know what I really liked here? Her father was the progressive in that lengthy flashback scene. The punk kid girl is the one who can't say goodbye to yesterday. That's kinda rare, especially in Japanese fiction. The first episode's ending was definitely a heck of a thing. It's a water cooler moment when a titan becomes a talkative conversation piece.

There are also titans in the walls, or as the dialogue put it, "the wall is made of titans." I may eat these words later, but right now I feel like no revelation will ever be too absurdist for me with this franchise. They could tell me the city is the eye of a titan named Macumber and the world itself is flat and I'd buy into it. Maybe that's the problem with society. Whoa, didn't mean to wax philosophical on ya, there, dear readers. Let's get back to it by saying that, yes, Sasha stabbing that titan in the eye was the best Link move I've seen in some time.

Also, a bit of a Persona 5 comment, but nothing Leon doesn't already know (er, because of... me). One thing Golden totally spoiled me on was the magnitude of voiced dialogue. Damn near everything in P4G was voiced -- and that was effectively my introduction to the franchise! I'm not complaining but it's certainly a bit surprising to me to see the in-between scenes feature grunts instead of sentences. I guess Crimson is gonna make a golden coin, eh? Absolutely loving the presentation, though, especially for everything that's voiced.

Haha, yeahhh, that's why I just described P4G as "effectively" my franchise introduction... <_<; My PSP went haywire on me. Technically to this day it still "works" but it is so. Impossibly. Infuriating. To try to use. But honestly, I would really rather play the PS2 version now anyway. Sacrilegious as that may be to some B8ers, I stand by it. The presentation is so much more up-my-alley from what I've seen Leon play of it.
