Best game lineup? 1997 or 1998?

So, this is just an early poll. I STRONGLY feel these will be the top 2. First of all, one has FFVII and the other has ZELDA. Second of all, the first 3 games I have listed for each year are SUPER STRONG titles.


Now, I WANT to personally vote for 1997 because out of ALL those games FINAL FANTASY VII is my favourite of them all, by a long shot! But I might have to go for 1998 and I'm gonna do a little list for myself and tally it up haha just to see what the rightful winner should be. I almost want to vote for 1997 for FFVII alone because it holds so much weight but I don't think I can do that....

Regarding these years, my top 10 would look like this.

1. FFVII (97) - 10 pts
2. MGS (98) - 9
3. Castlevania: SotN (97) - 8
4. Tekken 3 (technically a '97 title, but 98 for consoles which is what's counted) - 7
5. Zelda: OoT (98) - 6
6. Resident Evil 2 (98) - 5
7. Parasite Eve (98) - 4
8. Crash Bandicoot 2 (97) - 3
9. Goldeneye 007 (97) - 2
10. Crash Bandicoot 3 (98) - 1

1997: 23 pts.
1998: 32 pts.

Ughh, well there you have it. 1998 was truly a spectacular year for gaming indeed. I mean, you got Zelda, MGS AND RE2 in the SAME freaking year. And they are all like the best games of their franchises lol.

You left out some big names for '98. Pokemon Red/Blue, Starcraft: BW, Banjo Kazooie, etc. It's '98 for me easily.

Yeah, totally!!! I think 1998 was the biggest year in gaming!!!
Even though I'm personally not into those games I acknowledge they were big titles for sure. :)

I feel like '98 is more or less a shoe-in to win the contest. If it doesn't I would be pretty surprised.

'97 vs. '01 is debatable. I took '97 but it could go either way.

2001 has everything you could want! Strong Square title (FFX), strong Nintendo title (Melee) and strong Microsoft title (Halo), and also GTA. It should be able to draw votes from a variety of fanbases so I think it will beat 1997 which is carried by FFVII (which might get SFF'd just a bit by X)

98 would definitely beat 97. the only way it loses is a rally for 01, 15, or 16.

personally i'm voting for 97 if it comes to that, though. don't really care about anything from 98 other than Starcraft.

Honestly I think '98 can probably double '97. I think OoT almost broke 60% on FFVII back in the 2015 contest and its got a much better supporting cast.

However, the match is actually debatable if we assume OoT never existed.

Team '98: RBY as anchor, Banjo Kazooie for N64, FFT/Xenogears for Square, MGS/RE2 for other PS options, and Half-Life/Starcraft for PC
Team '97: FFVII as anchor, SotN as second PS option, GE007/SF64/MK64 for N64

I'd probably still take '98.

2001 is missing MGS2 from its list. I'm sorry, but that year was definitely better than 1997. I picked 1997 to win that semifinal, but that's only because Allen chose to leave out MGS2 from 2001. 2001 is the deepest year in the contest aside from 1998. But 1997 will probably still make it to the final.

Pokemon GSC and Zelda crushes Mario 64, which even Mario fans consider as overrated.

There's nothing else in that year relevant enough to flush out the Nintendo votes. Sony fanboys will wash out the N64 votes.

Never underestimate the nostalgia boner FF has when treating its franchise. FFX is known a lot more now as "modern FF" which pisses the majority of them off. If FFXIII and FFXV never happened, this would be a completely different story.
