Hangul was invented by a genius king of Korea during the Chosun dynasty - King Sejong.

He borrowed from Chinese character strokes to invent a whole new system of writing - HANGUL (literally Korean writing)

Imagine having western heritage and knowing your writing system is based on something from further back than AD1500. What archaic and outdated systems is that lmfao

Hangul is super easy to learn. It took me about 3 hours to learn the essentials and be able to read (slowly).

Serious mode

When reading Korean is actually important to remember that you're saying individual characters that make up words, not entire words themselves.

What this means is what you see the Korean for dog, "kangaji" don't say it just like how it's read here, kangaji
but it should be broken into three distinct sounds to create word "phrase" so to speak "kang-a-ji"

It's actually 1 syllable per err... clump of letters. I dunno if there's a word for that in English.

Even as long as I lived here, there are still a lot of things I'd rather say in Korean because it just works better.

Korean is considered one of 6 or so languages that is the hardest to learn though. It's because the grammar requires intuition to a certain degree

Wut. Hangul is like a millenium younger than English. Hangul was made with peasants in mind, that even the common folks could both read and speak a language, but to increase understanding, it was largely based off of Chinese characters. It's far more efficient, especially in terms of space, compared to english, and it doesn't require nearly as much memorization to read vs Chinese or Japanese

Hangeul as a writing system is excellent.

However, I have a few issues with some aspects of it - mostly (and I can't use hangeul on here) to do with 4 block syllables where not all sounds are pronounced.

Chicken (dak) has an extra and unneeded character (r/l - in this case l), and also many (man-hi) isn't fully pronounced (the h sound isn't hit).

That's my only concern, and there are other examples.

Otherwise, hangeul can be learned in a day and the way it's used in spoken language can be quite beautiful.

Source... I lived in Korea for around 6 years, have an MSc in Applied Linguistics, am now doing a PhD in Linguistics. I also lecture at a university... You... Uh... Wanted a linguist, yeah?

Can be hard for non-Koreans to pronounce the vowels. The hardest for me was the EU sound in komapsEUpnida (the _ sound... Wish we could type in hangeul).

Became a lot easier when I stopped using Seoul based studybooks to practise and went full with my Busan accent.

Hard to describe sounds in any language though. My biggest annoyance is American teachers here - they tend to teach the vowel a sound the same as the vowel o sound... Aa is not the same as Oo!

Most languages are hard.

Articles make English really difficult for many as well.

Spoken Korean uses a lot of quite abstract idiomatic expressions - I find that really hard to follow at times.

If only their grammar was just as simple as their writing system amirite? I've dabbled in Korean in the past so I'm able to read it (albeit slowly) still don't know what most of the words mean though unless it's a Japanese or English loanword.

I'm currently learning Japanese, if I ever get to an advanced enough level I would like to also learn Mandarin, or even go back to Korean. Asian languages are fun.
