I thought I woke up and started my day, then something weird happened and then I woke up and couldn't figure out if I'd gone back to bed or just never woke up

Ugh. Moaning for my wife to wake me up from the hell I'm in. Wife comes in, shakes me. Wake up in same condition. Avoid looking at doorways or windows because I don't want to see Shadowman or aliens. Repeat for what feels like two hours.

This band dredg thought about that and used it as most of the concept behind this album. Many lyrics in the songs directly refer to things that occur during sleep paralysis. Even the way certain songs sound and sound effects they use are a direct reflection of sleep paralysis in one or another. It's really cool. Check it out.

I've had problems with nightmares forever. Largely due to my overactive imagination. Sleep paralysis hallucinations are the worst time to have an imagination.

Did some quick wiki-research and sleeping on your back makes it more likely. I too have trouble sleeping on my back and usually turn to my left and lay on my side for a bit, and get most comfortable prone on my stomach which is the worst for my back.

Pretty much every time I've had sleep paralysis I was either like "drowning" or otherwise unable to breathe

This is what happened to me the one time I had sleep paralysis. I was semi-conscious and trying to scream help but my words came out as thin as air, like a whisper. Shit was scary.
