C/D???

CCCCCCC

Just say WHERE YOU'RE FROM

Stop trying to claim other people's hometowns for yours. Just because you grew up in some shitty boring suburb doesn't give you the right to say you're from somewhere more interesting. Own up to your garbage upbringing.

Suberbs are considered metropolitan areas of any given city, so people who live in the burbs but say they're from that city are technically correct.

No they're not. They can say they're from the Chicago metro area, not Chicago. Chicago has clearly defined limits, like every major city.

I think that's fine.

All you have to say is you're from near or outside the city. But don't pretend you're from it. People that are actually from the city can spot the fakers the moment they open their mouths. The accent gives it away instantly.

It's all about intentions. If you say you're from Chicago and you're not you're doing two things: 1) You're lying. 2) You're diminishing the identity of the people that are actually from Chicago, who almost certainly do not see suburbanites as being from their home.

Depends on how much the person you're talking to knows about your area.

My hometown is Salem, OR and a few times I remember my dad saying to people from other states that we were from Portland... that is too far. Salem is not a suburb and it's too far away to lie like that. He was just bitter about not living in Portland.

It's hilarious how all of the people saying it doesn't matter, then go on to confirm how they're from the suburbs. Of course YOU think it's okay. But that's because you're from boring, bland middle-American shitholes, so you try to claim a lifestyle that was never yours.

Never heard that one before. And to be clear, I have no problem with people that commute to work in the city. But visiting and working in the city is simply not the same thing as living there.

To think that there are people out there who live 1.5-2 hrs outside of my hometown--where I spent almost every waking moment of my life 24/7 for over 18 years--claiming it as their own is absurd.

I like how, if you drive as much as half a mile an hour over the speed limit in their subdivision, you get a these pansy dads running out and yelling, Slow Down. Yet they are the same pricks that ride everyones ass as they commute 25+ miles to work one way, each day.

Also I find suburbia a sort of reverse segregation.

Depends on who I'm talking to. If I'm talking to someone local I say I'm from the specific suburb because they know where that is. If I'm talking to someone who doesn't know the area I say I'm from [major city] because I know if I said I lived in [suburb] they would ask where's that and I would respond with near [major city] so it saves time.

They have their own local government. If they were under the same mayor/municipal government, then they would be considered a part of the central city, but they aren't.

Even within central cities, there are often areas within the city limits that could be considered "suburban" because they are less densely populated, farther away from the city center, etc. But none of that matters, because they are in the city limits and can accurately say they are from the city, while those people outside the limits are lying frauds.
