So far we've geeked out over A Song of Ice and Fire, but then he made a reference to "the Shire" and I had to google to figure it out >__>

I needed to start a new book anyway!

When reading ASoIaF, did you ever think, "man, I wish this was about a hundred times more boring and verbose?"

If so, LotR may be the book for you.

Wow, that is true love.

I could never get through LoTR (I did make it through the hobbit I think eons ago).

Gave up on SoIaF as well (book 2 or 3?), although I have finally made it through the HBO series.

Get your lover/bf whatever to read the Dresden books by Jim Butcher and read em yourself. That is a good read and it'll take you both like a year probably lol.

Lol, I burned through like two of those books on a weekend, they're not hard reads.

LotR on the other hand I would use to put me to sleep in HS because it was so damn boring.

Hehe, I just mean if you actually make it through them all.

Some people really like them though, but if your not one of them, it will not be easy to get through.

If you like long descriptions and slow pace, and pages and pages of useless information though, it's the series for you.

It's kinda like a new age version of shakespear in a way. If you love reading for the WORDS and love flowery language, then Tolkien will be your god.

I read for the story, I don't even actually like to notice the words, so yeah, those books never worked for me.

I was just perusing through that topic and waffled back and forth between posting this OP in there, lol.

It seems like LotR is a nerd classic and I guess I want to try to understand this guy's references in the future.

Watch the movies then, it's one of those things where the material is the important thing, not the book. I haven't seen anyone suggest other people read LotR, just that it's this monolith of fantasy.

One upon a time, a midget gets a ring from his uncle that's actually the soul of an evil dude. He and some buddies go on a big adventure to throw the ring into a magical volcano to destroy it because regular volcanoes aren't magical enough. Eventually, they succeed, and everybody gets super duper happy.

Important differences from films:

FotR:
-17 years pass between the birthday party and Gandalf's return and reveal about the one Ring. Gandalf shares details of Smeagol's past with Frodo
-Sam, Merry, Pippin and Fatty conspire with each other to help Frodo with the Ring. Fatty stays behind in Buckland while the others decide to escort Frodo to Rivendell.
-They travel through the Old Forest, and get attacked by Old Man Willow. They're rescued by the nature spirit Tom Bombadil, who has no interest in the conflicts of men.
-They are later attacked in the Barrow Downs by Wights, and again rescued by Tom Bombadil. From the Barrows they steal a set of magic daggers.
-They learn Gandalf had a 9 on 1 fight with the Nazgul at Weathertop.
-At Weathertop, the Nazgul track them down, but not because of Merry and Pippin eating bacon or whatever the films did.
-Frodo is rescued by Glorfindel, not Arwen.
-There are a lot more dudes at the Council of Elrond.
-Sam is injured within Moria while killing his first orc.
-I don't think the cave troll fight happens. Frodo gets stabbed by an orc captain with a spear, not a troll, IIRC. I might be misremembering.
-When leaving Lothlorien they all ask for gifts and Gimli gets some of Galadriel's hair. This might happen in the films too. Can't remember what other people asked for.
-When sitting on that one magic chair, Frodo witnesses the strength of men, but then sees the strength of Sauron and concludes that men don't have a chance. This might happen in the films too I can't remember.
-The book ends before Boromir dies.

I haven't read the books or watched the films in like ten years so some of that might be off. If you watch the films and then remember to mention Tom Bombadil you can definitely fake it.

I also forgot about them reforging Narsil and the significance of Gil Galad.
