The movies first is definitely a good idea. He wanted to take these desperate stories and mythologies and unite them into a single form. He also wanted to make the elven language, and felt he needed a culture to go along with it. He was a giant nerd. If you like them though I recommend The Wheel of Time Series by Robert Jordan. He took a lot of the themes of how mythology, stories, and history interact with each other. But Where Tolkien was an academic, Jordan's primary goal was to tell a good fantasy story.
