Playerunknown's Battlegrounds is a Steam game that's essentially a Battle Royale simulator. 100 people are loaded up into a plane (with voice chat on oh God it's like being in voice chat with the entire Internet), and the plane flies over an island. You choose a point to eject from the plane over the island and you immediately start scavenging for weapons and armor.

There are weapons and armor scattered about in various buildings and it's really not hard to find some guns and ammo. There are team modes where it's groups of people and modes where it's every man for themselves.

Last one alive wins.

The play area shrinks throughout the match to corral people into a single area. There are air strikes and electric fences and fun times.

It's a little janky, it's in early access and it feels a lot like a mod with a ton of promise. The main developer started out, as I understand it, with Arma and H1Z1 modding and stuff like that. The game is currently $30 on Steam, with the only discount to my knowledge being the standard 10% discount for those who subscribe to the Humble Monthly bundle.

It's kind of a high asking price but I think it would be great fun if we get enough people interested. I'm not going to buy yet until we determine that a few people are interested in getting in on the action.

I believe they intend to allow people to host their own servers eventually. But for now it's all dedicated servers for public multiplayer. There are solo and team modes in public matches currently, and you can turn all chat and what not off or restrict it to team.

Just out of interest how are you guys finding it? I've heard it's basically a more promising H1Z1 but is currently incredibly rough around the edges even in comparison to that. Would that be a fair description?

Its only been out for a month or so, so yeah it still has some work to be done. Can be kinda laggy in the cities.

But H1Z1 is a lot more crazy and fast paced where as PUBG is slower and more tactical. H1Z1 you go out and find people to kill, in PUBG you play safe and avoid fighting whenever you can.

Game is a lot of fun especially in a 4 man squad -- already prefer it over H1Z1 and imagine that gap will only grow.
