I would say probably because they don't really take as many chances. For critically acclaimed shows: Mad Men The Sopranos MASH Cheers I Love Lucy The Mary Tyler Moore Show All in the Family All of them are considered pinnacles of TV for their extended greatness. You have a few that are top tier for 99% of the run but have a black sheep season spoiling matters (Seinfeld, Parks and Rec, Breaking Bad).* For currently airing tv shows, The Americans and Fargo (anthology but still) show no signs of slowing down. All for thier first seasons.
