Dig Dug is good. Ms Pac Man is the best Pac Man. Pole Position is great. Pitfall is a game of significant influence. Xevious is one of the great underappreciated games both in quality and influence.

Surprised 1980 isn't at least second. I figured 80 and 81 would be an easy top 2.

I think it has to do with the age of the games and the age of the voters. Most are probably to young to even know what games came out those years. So a random vote is placed or they pick the year with the nicest picture.

That's true, Xevious is a really good one and it's close between that and Dig Dug.
Best game for each year IMO (For pictures, I imagine there's something not pictured that's pretty big): 80: Asteroids 81: Galaga (Would probably be Ultima if I didn't play so many RPGs before it) 82: Dig Dug 83: M.U.L.E. 84: 1942 I think 84 seems to me the weakest --- Build a man a fire and he'll be warm for a day.
