caveat here that the old Rare platformers are my favorite games ever, so keep that in mind

I'm at 84/145 Pagies, and 751/1010 quills, all moves unlocked, all levels unlocked and expanded

The Good

-They absolutely nailed to feel of the game. From the music to the characters, it feels ripped straight out the 90s and updated for HD

-Levels are big with lots to do, but are really well designed in that, there are plenty of landmarks to help navigate them. I never got lost (except in the hub world, more on that later)

-Wide variety of challenges. I haven't gotten the feeling of doing the same thing twice

-The ability variety and progression is great. Nearly every move has multiple purposes for combat or traversal, and none of them feel like "keys" that are simply there to unlock gates

-Each level is self-contained like Banjo-Kazooie--You will have to return with new abilities, but there's nothing like in Banjo-Tooie where you have to go back and forth between worlds

-There is a heavy focus on pure platforming. There are mini-games of course, but by and large the focus is platform/traversal challenges

-Despite the large size, the levels don't feel empty, with 200 quills and 25 pagies spread throughout

-It follows the basic formula of Banjo games to a tee, which is exactly what I wanted. Your mileage may vary on that but having a Rare-style platformer again makes me so happy

-This is a big one for me because a lot of modern platformers skip this in favor of "realistic lighting": There is a shadow directly under your character, so that there is no guesswork involved in where you're positioned in space when platforming

-For those of you that hate scouring a level for that last collectible, they did include a power-up that alerts you when you're near something hidden

The Bad

-the camera isn't very good. You can move it as you please, but it gets stuck on things and sometimes shifts awkwardly while you're moving causing you to change directions

-only 5 worlds is disappointing. There is plenty to do in each of them, but more variety would have been nice

-the world expanding gimmick isn't used very well. I really liked the idea of it, but functionally what it means is your first time through a level you're playing a clearly incomplete level, with paths that lead nowhere. After the first world, I didn't even bother starting a new level until I had enough Pagies to expand it immediately before entering. I also think the expansion concept could have been a great way to introduce variety. They could have the expansion be something totally different, like unlocking a volcano area within the jungle world, or a factory within the poisoned swamp world

-the transformations aren't that interesting, and one of them (in the ice world) is straight up bad

-the game doesn't explain your moves that well. for example, I was stuck for a while on a challenge that involved a laser in a room. Turns out your invisibility power also reflects beams, which I chanced into finding out

-some of the controls take some getting used to. I've seen them described as loose, but I think the issue is it really uses the analog control a lot. The rolling power is hard to control at first--until you realize that in many situations you shouldn't be pushing the stick all the way

-some of the mini-games are frustratingl (but I wouldn't have it any other way in a game like this)

-the hub world is huge and confusing, and difficult to find levels in

Overall, I'm loving this game. Feels exactly like a proper Banjo sequel, and the type of game I've been waiting over a decade for. If you don't like Banjo/collectathons, you might not like this because it doesn't bring anything new to the table, but if you do like this kind of game, it's well-made and thoroughly enjoyable

oh, and because I ran out of space--

one other quibble i have is the unskippable text sections and how slowly they scroll. this is especially problematic during the three quiz sections. (and speaking of the quiz sections, they had a habit of asking questions I had no way of knowing the answer too yet, such as about levels I hadn't been to or expanded parts of worlds I hadn't unlocked--but they were over quickly)

How would you rank it with the Banjo games?

Tough to say, because the core gameplay is on par with the other games if even a little better due to the focus on pure platforming that neither Banjo game really had that much of

But aesthetically the levels aren't as memorable, really having no unique gimmick beyond the theme

Overall I'd probably call it "just as good" as them for the most part, but in its own way. Also it has been a couple years since I last played them.

It does have more "annoyingly difficult" challenges (mainly the mini-games) than either back or BT, but it also has a lot more challenges (and of course, many are optional) so they're easy to forgive

What are the themes for the five worlds? 5 seems really disappointing to me. Even if they expand, one of the things that was compelling about collectathons (to me, as a kid in the 90s/early 2000s at least) was the different ways they could fuse the core gameplay with different worlds to create experiences that really felt kind of different even though they were basically the same -- I mean, iirc, Banjo Kazooie had like 3 different water levels and they all felt different and unique

jungle/temple, snow, swamp, casino, space

the snow level does a pretty good job having two distinct "areas" for the expansion, the first part is just regular snow and then the second part is the inside of a castle, but the rest pretty much stick with the same theme throughout

That's pretty disappointing. Outside of space those are some pretty generic themes to have as well.

how empty are the worlds? some of the footage was giving me serious banjo tooie vibes in terms of how much nothing there was despite the large areas

basically is the game more like kazooie or tooie? because if it's the latter i want nothing to do with it

It's more Kazooie

the levels don't feel empty at all. the rolling (fast moving) powerup is the first one you get and it takes no time to traverse levels. with 25 pagies per level there is plenty to do.

It's also more like Kazooie in that each pagie is an individual platforming challenge--none of them require you to do something in another level (other than getting new abilities) and very few of them even require you to do something else first within a level

just finished it. 100%: all pagies, quills, powerups, and secret items. 25 hours 30 minutes

great game, much better than the reviews give it credit for. highly recommended if you like 3D platformers--from start to finish there's a ton of gameplay variety; if you wanted a sequel to the Banjo series, this is it

9/10

Like I said, despite the big levels it's much more Kazooie than Tooie. It doesn't have any of the tedious backtracking between worlds, all the moves are kazooie style (no split up stuff, etc.), keeps the collectibles to a relative minimum (there's pagies (jiggies), quills (notes), and ghostwriters (jinjos), then one each of the mollycool (mumbo token) and play coin (unlocks the world's retro minigame) per world), and every pagie is an individual challenge

a large percentage of the pagies are "stomp a switch, do some platforming obstacle course, get pagie", or a series of escalating challenge rooms (say, "step on four switches in a short amount of time, move to next room, step on four switches but now they're moving, next room, step on four moving switches but now there's electricity to avoid")

for sure

25 hours is a lot more than plenty of $60 games, also the amount of time where a game starts pushing into "too long" territory (unless it's an RPG) imo

I really appreciate your indepth thoughts. I was kind of on the fence but after reading this I think I'm going to dive in and get it. I loved Banjo Kazooie growing up but disliked the world connection in Tooie. I'm glad to hear each world is self contained in this one.
