I fully approve of the topic title as I am of the opinion that Rem is indeed love

So on the anime side I'm watching the second season of Rewrite, it's an.... interesting series to say the least (and quite confusing to boot)

On the game side I broke my Persona virginity and got Persona 5, it's quite good so far and it oozes style in all the right ways

I should be wrapping up higurashi soon.. It's hard for me to get through long series especially when watching seasonal anime..

Higurashi spoilersI really like Takano's character design, I'm glad she got wrapped up into the plot. I really commend the series for the way it goes about it's worldbuilding spread over story/timeline arcs. I don't think I've seen anything like that.

The atmosphere is pretty unique too. Seems scary/tense anime is hard to pull off and rarely done well.

Alright, I've been playing Rune Factory 4 and now I've managed to get all the bachelorettes up to 7 LP, which is the minimum for them to accept my confession. (Just finished the 1st arc and I'm on Fall 1)

Now comes the hard part of deciding who I should go for!

I've really been liking Clorica, but I've managed to get a lot of events with Forte. Margaret's pretty cute too.

Ugh. Decisions decisions.

For spring 2017 anime, I wanna give a shoutout to these two:

Sakura Quest, it feels like Shirobako meets Hanasaku Iroha, and all three of these anime are done by PA works. It's just a fun, workplace/SoL. Since the animation studio rarely disappoints and they're working with what they've succeeded with before, I feel certain that the future episodes will be quality. There's only been one episode, but I want to watch all of it, like right now.

Tsuki ga Kirei, It's going at romance/character-drama by taking the grounded, realistic approach. The character/social interactions of a 9th grader, that 14/15 y/o range, feel entirely real and empathetic. You really don't see realistic youngin' teenagers portrayed often; their ego's and desires aren't solid, they're often stupid and mistake prone because of their inexperience. I want to see more characterization and how they blossom. Hopefully, this will deliver.

Came back from watching Your Name a few hours ago. I was hoping it was dubbed, just so I wouldn't have to split focus between the screen and the subs the whole time, but it was subbed. There were also only two testicles in the whole theater. (And there were several criers..) >.>

I loved the movie; classic Shinkai greatness. Glad I went to see it, and I'll probably wind up buying it.

I dunno if any of you guys saw Nyanko Days or if you're in the mood for another seriously moe show, but I strongly rec Hinako Note. I don't think anything this season will be able to surpass its pure charms. It frequently jumps to chibi style and the girls are just the best. It's plot and setting is similar to Gochiusa. Quite comfy and very silly

Ah, when I went, it was a 11 am showing. There were probably a dozen people I watched it with. Pretty good audience; No laughs, no cries, no awws, no weabooisms, but one ew during the shrine maiden spit sake scene.

I went out of my way to watch it subbed, since the film is particularly rooted in japanese culture. In that case, it's impossible to make a dub to capture all the cultural nuances of their language.

The dialogue wasn't fancy enough to make having a split attention difficult, but god damn every frame is so detailed, you just want to stare it it endlessly. Even at parts without dialogue, there isn't enough time to absorb everything.

Also, the japanese VA were atypical, so the actors more closely reflects actual speaking japanese than anime speak.

this is not true

You can make pretty good dubs, and you can always recreate jokes/puns if there's wordplay involved, but it's not the same.

Example, there's 4 different ways to say "I", and if the dialogue makes a joke regarding that nuance, you just can't imitate that without re-purposing the dialogue.

I don't know if you've ever seen translator notes for individual episodes, but they can get pretty lengthy about how they handle nuances of the language. No matter how well they translate something, there's sometimes nuances in the language that has to be explained to translate fully.

https://tlnotes.com/2017/01/20/konosuba-ep-2-notes/

You can make incredibly good dubs like for Cowboy Bebop, and you can translate the vast majority of a show's dialogue well enough, but language is intimate with it's own culture and there's always something that can't be translated fully without explanation. It's a problem with subs too, but I like seeing the occasional small note attempting to convey some nuance.

I'm with @eating4fun, there are things that would literally be impossible to get across in a dub. Just can't do it. Like, in English, four doesn't sound like death.

I have always preferred subs though there are a number of good Dubs like (in my opinion) Ninja Scroll 2004 and Desert Punk.
Wholeheartedly agree that some things just can't be translated well enough in a dub though.
If I'm not mistaken the dub of Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi could not do the original script justice. But there is this masterpiece of a scene from the dub.

Considering just how different japanese culture is there really are some things that just have to be lost in translation. The multiple ways you can refer to yourself are an obvious example. like imagine something in english that starts out like "I woke up and...". In english, we know nothing about what woke up. Could be a man, woman, child, animal, robot, sentient shovel, no one knows. In japan you would already be giving away information with just that by what you chose to refer to with I. If you go with boku for instance that signals that its a boy.

Then there are the differences in status determined by speech with stuff like san and kun and all that stuff. Those things can be used to a subtle effect that english just doesn't have a way to express without writing out a mini language lesson every time its referenced.

Even beyond that though, lots of words, english or japanese have connotations not in built to the definition. Unusual and weird mean the same thing but weird caries a more negative connotation. Then you also have the connotation with unusual about what its describing. If you say a person is unusual, that itself is a bit of an unusual way to describe it, normally you would go with a synonym like weird. If someone did say "that person is unusual" that would help inform you about the speakers mannerisms and speech. Foreign languages don't necessarily have these same connotations so even though the meaning of the word is translated, some of the context and tone can be lost in translation.

The quality of a translation can be fantastic and its easily possible for a translation to actually be better than the original but a true 1 to 1 translation is simply impossible and it effects some things more than others.

I decided to give Knights of Sidonia a try on Netflix today. I liked it enough to get through the whole first season in one go. But one thing about it that bugs me is that there is this one character that is a talking bear. For no reason at all and totally out of place, just a talking bear. Like whoever created it just loves talking bears and decided "Fuck it, I'm putting in a talking bear."

Its amazing how little realism actually matters for cases like that. Similar to the penguin in eva. I kinda wonder if replacing one of the characters with something absurd in an otherwise normal show has a positive effect as far as psychological shows go.

I dunno. But then again, anime movies are a different category for me. The list works out differently if I factor those in.

Starting Konosuba right now.

I have a different section for movies as well.
