It's pretty crazy at this point honestly. I've seen 3 strong examples of this the past 5 days.

1. I'm at work at the hospital and a white woman I work with was looking for some scissors. She couldn't find any so she ask me and another black guy casually if we had a pocket knife on one of us. It was a very honest question. We are in the south so people carry pocket knives all the time. Especially white people. The thing is that you won't catch a black person carrying a weapon like that at work. You won't catch us carrying a weapon like that in general unless for a specific reason. We know what that can lead to. We looked at each other and laughed. There was no way in hell we would bring that to work. She didn't fully understand.

2. My brother got a white girl pregnant which is a risk down here to begin with. Some of you may remember that topic I made. She didn't tell anyone. Now she finally wants to tell her parents this in person with him together. She told my brother this and the first question he asked was, "Do they know I'm black?" She said no and asked why does it matter? I don't understand how she doesn't know why it doesn't matter. It matters a ton. You could have him walk into his own death to be honest. He told her that and she claimed he was being silly. She just doesn't understand.

3. At work a Dr that trust me a lot asked me to take his car and get some gas for him since he was about to go out of town when he gets off. He said to stay on the clock and do it and you can go home early afterwards for doing him this favor. It was a 2016 Mercedes-Benz. I guess he saw I was nervous and asked what was wrong. I said it was nothing and went to do that for him. The thing is that... black people stick out in cars like that. Especially young black males. We are targeted by police and such when they see something like that. I was pretty nervous while driving his car and I don't think he understood why.

Not all whites people don't understand but many of them don't.

It would be dumb as fuck if it didn't happen. Hell my brother got pulled over out of state in Mississippi because he was driving a 2010 ford tarus 3 years ago because they didn't recognize the car and there was a drug problem in the city. There was no reason to pull him over since he done nothing wrong. They didn't have a description. They just saw a young black guy in a decent car in a city that you didn't see that much and pulled him over.

Also, if you don't see why it could be a huge problem for a white family not knowing their daughter was pregnant by a black guy then you are truly sheltered

This isn't just a thing that black people experience, though. After graduating highschool, a friend's dad let us take his Porsche out for a drive around town and even though we were white we were stopped by the cops because we were 3 highschool kids in a Porsche. Once we explained the situation, it was no problem and he sent us on our way.

Nope if you're young and black it's pretty likely you get pulled over in a nice car the second you do anything suspicious.

Trying to flip it doesn't really work here. These things we think were heavily shapped by history. What negativity can I point out that happened consistently over time for white people could have shapped their mentality towards certain things? That's why that isn't a fair comparison. I would honestly say that I don't know what the white mentality is because it isn't as blatant overall IMO outside of certain situations.

I guess you can say 1 is more paranoia than anything but there is a reason why that is.

2. Sure that is a rare occurrence but it has happened enough in real life for it to be a legit concern. Not people dying per day but defiantly violence breaking out.

3. It's not about black people getting pulled over more for speeding. It's about getting pulled over more often in certain situations when you weren't breaking the law.

Could this be why white people are "still don't understand the black mentality"?

I may be wrong, but my understanding of this situation and those like it is almost exactly like this topic.
The BLM meeting is going to go to an advanced level of the injustice the black community feels they face from police and basically a white-centered society. They want to delve into the deep issues and figure out the best course of action that would allow people of all colors to be equal.
Having white people show up and ask questions like in this topic, not understanding or accepting why TC's reasons are indicative of the minor aggressions a black man faces in his day-to-day life, would mean that they would struggle to accomplish the things they really want to address.

For comparison, imagine an academic biblical group. This group wants to delve into the deep meanings of scripture and analyze the OT compared to the NT.
There's nothing wrong with an atheist who wants to learn about the bible, but the meetings would stop being about the original intent if you have a person who is refusing to accept that God is real.

The pocket knife one doesn't seem to bad to me, but I'm not from the south so I can't really comment on the atmosphere and strength of stereotypes there. I will say that there are still a lot of ignorance and misconceptions from people who don't really hang around people with different ethnic backgrounds. As diverse as it is, there's still white people who make comments like "you're one of the good ones", or black people being surprised at a white person that dances well.

There really is a difference in how we see the world, because of our environment. Black kids are taught to avoid the police at an early age. The pressure of not being a failure of society is heavily pushed on black males which doesn't really motivate them.

Some people here still think it's safe for all gay people to be out now without any consequences, so I'm not surprised.
