so a bunch of people cited Twin Peaks as a 10/10 show in a previous topic and i saw it was on netflix. watched the first episode. thought it was okay and saw some potential.

i got to the part in the second episode where the abusive boyfriend character sternly told his girlfriend to do the laundry and there's a bloody shirt reveal. now obviously he didn't kill the girl but i got curious so i google searched "who killed laura palmer" and got back

It was revealed that Laura's father Leland Palmer murdered her while possessed by a malefic being known as Killer BOB.

which promptly killed any interest i had in the show for the time being.

so i guess questions i have are: is it as stupid as this makes it sound like? why do you personally think it's amazing? and is there any context i'm missing?

i will probably not spend more time watching it but maybe i can still appreciate the show for what it did.

also i can't unsee the FBI agent as Gabe from The Office.

no. the 15 episodes you skipped in order to ruin the mystery of this murder mystery tv show were all just filler fluff that did not provide any context whatsoever

You were a big dumbass >_>

And yes, that spoiler makes way more sense and is way more interesting than you think it is. We can't really talk about it much because we'd ruin it further, but just consider the fact 'a fat plumber fights an overgrown firebreathing turtle to rescue a princess who loves to bake cakes' is an apt comparison to the thing you read. Do you think Mario games aren't quality just because of how ridiculous the premise is on paper?

i meant context outside of plot elements. maybe historically it did something cool for the medium or something like that.

it being a mystery probably meant i was going to lose interest sooner or later anyway but that doesn't mean i want to think of it as a bad show or anything. it's just that if most of why people consider it good is because of plot-related reasons then i can at least be sure that it personally wasn't for me.

please do talk about it. there's a way higher chance of me watching/checking something out after i hear what's cool about it in depth in cases where the appeal isn't immediate like here.

I don't even. You don't deserve Twin Peaks. Go watch Family Guy or some s***.

i got it.

one cool thing about this show is that there are these scenes where you're not sure whether you're supposed to laugh or not. that kind of consistent tonal duality is impressive.

Plot-related reasons aren't why the show remains so highly regarded - the murder mystery/soap opera plot web is the initial draw but the mechanics of that are a front for a much deeper exploration of the human condition, and are entirely secondary to the show's aesthetic. Becoming a Twin Peaks fan is mostly about falling in love with the town and it's characters, the uncanny mood and music. For what it's worth I didn't quite *get* why the show was so highly regarded until episode three, so I think you should watch one more!

and i guess my opening post made it sound worse than it actually was but it wasn't like i was immensely enjoying the show, looked the spoiler up and that was the sole reason the show was "ruined" for me.

there were already small things here and there that were bothering me and when i saw that i thought i was getting another 999 situation which was not interested in.

This exactly. Duality is a major theme
