It's inferior in every way to the original. All of the songs are worse, the voice acting is worse for literally every character except Chip, they added a new song that's bad and messes up the flow, and they added a subplot where Gaston tries to kill Belle's dad. Worst part is the Gaston song, which is terribly sung and has Le Fou bribe everyone to sing for Gaston instead of the villagers just loving him.

I'd say they're all worse than the originals at the best least, but Beast is the worst of them. It's most noticeable with Lumierre, who sounds terrible when singing as well, but not quite as bad.

https://www.moviefone.com/2017/03/17/mulan-exclusive-niki-caro/
Earlier today I spoke to Niki Caro, the amazingly talented director of "Whale Rider," "McFarland, USA," and the upcoming, incredibly moving "The Zookeeper's Wife" (we'll have more on that in a bit), and at the end of the conversation I brought up her upcoming remake of Disney's animated classic "Mulan." And she gave us exclusive details about her live-action version of the movie and why you should very much look forward to the movie.

(...)

Moviefone: But from what I understand, no songs?

Niki Caro:
Yes, from what I understand, no songs right now, much to the horror of my children.

no getting down to business.
all you wanted was a movie worth paying for and you may need to reflect on that.

They made her a little more active, but I'd say it's about the same.

Forgot to mention that Emma Watson just stares and smiles blankly during the Be Our Guest song, not reacting to anything happening in front of her.

I don't know if I would say "smiles blankly", but yeah I would agree that her reactions in any of the heavily animated sections don't always accurately match what is happening around her.

I saw it tonight too. Wasn't good or bad, was just "meh." This was such a straight, at many times shot-for-shot remake of the original that I don't really know what the point was in making it other than as a money-grab. Never would have expected The Jungle Book to become the gold standard for this line of movies, but here we are.

Yeah, like in the star wars prequels you typically blame direction when the actors have poor interaction for green screen sequences.

They also went quite a bit overboard on the animation any time the dresser was doing anything, what with the infinity number of ribbons and bolts of cloth.

But still, these are minors gripes, and watching this movie had me humming the songs all day.

I also appreciated being given more insight into belle and beast's individual backstories. It wasn't overbearing, but it gave a bit more context to the characters and gave them more of a reason to relate to each other than simply being stuck in the same place together.

Also, I should mention the new Beast song, which totally breaks the mood. Beast goes from singing about how Belle will always be part of him to being despondent and not caring about Gaston attacking in one scene. I guess they wanted him to have a song of his own, but it's so weird and out of place.

It's because he saw the mob and figured it meant Belle was never coming back. Like maybe she'd told the townspeople how she was held prisoner and they set out to get vengeance or something.

As for the part about Gaston trying to kill Belle's dad, I remember thinking earlier on that Gaston wasn't really coming off like a true villain in this version, so much as just an obnoxious but still kinda likable jerk. The father thing cleared that right up.

No, he did more to earn her affection. He was really nothing but kind and gentle with her after they saved each others lives from the wolves. There was a scene where they left the castle together through a magic book, where he helped her learn the truth of her mother's death. Plus they made a point of showing that her village "library" was just a row of like seven books on a desk, so the Beast giving her his ginormous library certainly wowed her. There were multiple conversations where they bonded over books, lol.

I was thinking this same thing, but the cartoon version had Gaston act basically the same up to the attempted murder and still come off as the villain, so I think that's another problem of this remake.

I liked that he wasn't as villainous as first. It showed his descent into madness, into showing that he was the real beast. It was good development.

Just saw the movie. It was dope.

Gaston not seeming villainous for most of the time is what makes him so great in the original. In any other classic fairy tale like this, Gaston would be the town hero who kills the beast at the end to save the girl. That heroism being flipped on its head is always what made Gaston a cool character to me. The subplot with Belle's father here kind of ruined that and just made him an evil dick to me. Not my favorite Disney villain but he's actually up there! (Frollo's the best, btw.)
