I've seen the line quoted before. I love that Dennis doesn't seem to be aware of how much of a creep he is. (In 6x01 he talks about how he feels feelings again, like he did when he was a 14-year-old. Mac again seems... pretty disturbed by this.)

I tried watching this show about seven years ago and couldn't stand it. I got through 2x01 (where Frank appears) and just dropped it hard. It looked terrible visually; the characters were fairly ugly; their voices were annoying; and they yelled at each other all the time. I thought the situations were super-lowbrow humor, and the premise afterward of 'They're so horrible, it's hilarious!' just didn't click with me at the time. Frank is pretty much the worst of the lot, so when he got added I just skipped town.

I think about a year ago I caught 'The Nightman Cometh' and 'Paddy's Pub: Home of Kitten Mittens' on TV back-to-back and was fully prepared to hate them. And then I didn't. I didn't really follow up, but I got used to it.

Probably several things have clicked for me since then, because I'm really enjoying it more now:

- being able to look forward to at least two episode where I did enjoy the characters
- being more aware that the Gang always gets some sort of comeuppance
- probably just enjoying lowbrow humor a lot more
- getting a lot more inured to white people yelling at each other (probably due to watching New Girl)
- understanding more that the repugnant attitudes of the characters is meant to be an indictment on them (and the reason why they're punished at the end)
- generally, the show becoming better
- somehow, I think the characters aren't as ugly now. Maybe I've just gotten uglier.
- getting to feel out the characters' distinct personalities as opposed to 'a bunch of annoying white people.'

Some stuff is still painful to watch. Dee riding the bus in front of a huge, fat Hispanic man who's staring at her unresponsively and then throws up on her is still mostly gross. But I overlook that type of thing now for the entertaining parts.

Mostly leaving the yelling aside, I just find the way the characters interact to be much funnier now. The way they feed off or point out one another's flawed ideas is really fun. And the thing is, they're not all negative all the time. 'The Nightman Cometh' is one of my favorites because of the hilarious way it reverses the power dynamic, and suddenly Charlie is in charge. He doesn't have any real leverage, but all the Gang actually wants (almost inexplicably!) to be in the musical.

Favorite character's probably Mac, who can play both the straight man or the funny man depending on whom he's paired with, and who genuinely seems to be more of a douche/loser/moron than a bad guy. Favorite guests are the Lawyer, the Waitress, and Rickety Cricket (the single most f***ed up victim of the Gang).

The implication gets better when you get to "The Gang Goes to Hell"

I started watching the series back in 2011 and wondered why I didn't begin sooner; now it's top 5 all-time for me. My favorite character is Charlie, but the second favorite depends on the situation. If Frank's paired up with Charlie in a scene/episode, he's #2. Otherwise, #2 is Mac.

i just watched the episode with Frank's birthday and the Gang getting Charlie the gifts out of his dream-book. I'm kinda surprised that they didn't wind up doing anything evil at the end of it!

My friend was saying this is probably going to end soon and it's not as great, but I just finished the latest season and I think it's one of the top seasons they've had. Thoughts?

The last few seasons have been pretty damn good.

Pretty sure it's not going anywhere anytime soon. To the best of my knowledge, they all still love making the show. Plus it's pretty much still the biggest reason for cable providers to carry FXX, so the network has no reason to cut it.

It surprised me because my friend is a much bigger Sunny fan than I am and got me to watch it. I only started watching it a month or two ago and now I've finished the whole thing, and I thought from beginning to end the latest season was gold.

I plan on watching this for my comedy fix after I finally finish Portlandia

I love how each member of the gang can be a voice of reason towards each other's insanity, while also still engaging in insanity of their own. Like in the implication exchange, Mac sees what's f***ed up about what Dennis is saying, but that doesn't stop him from doing ridiculous stuff all the time too. That way everyone's fun and there's no "wet blanket" character who's constantly pointing out how dumb everyone else is.

This bothers me in dramas (it's why I dropped House of Cards for example), but I'm totally fine with it in comedies.
