I clicked on that but I was afraid it was going to be something actually from BotW. I don't wanna see any more of that game til I have it on Friday!



Also, the reason I actually clicked on this topic was to say that I didn't know the Nuggets played again tonight, but apparently Jokic got his second consecutive triple-double. I know that Westbrook had like seven in a row but WHATEVER AND HE'S A CHUCKER

I haven't read any reviews because reviews always spoil shit but I'm sure this'll be the next big Metacritic game for whatever that's worth (not much). I'm hopeful that it'll be my favorite Zelda but I am suddenly struck by the thought that it's probably going to have the lowest completion rate of any 3D Zelda since it's imitating Western games in some ways and big open Western games have extremely low completion rates. It doesn't matter to me personally but it'll be interesting to see how the normies respond to the game.

I'm afraid it's going to be the kind of game that you can beat in 10 hours but need to play at least 100 to feel like you're really getting a substantial experience out of it. I just hope that it gives you some level of direction/objectives and that it's not possible to accidentally miss a bunch of the story. It better be more than just the original LoZ but bigger and in 3D. That kind of lack of narrative and exposition doesn't fly today. I'm a little apprehensive about this being a "what the fans wanted" Zelda. The other ones were ALBW and TP, which used better games than LoZ as their main inspiration and were still pretty weak entries.

Also, I just got confirmation from Best Buy that my preorders will be available tomorrow. That's a relief... now I just hope it won't be packed whenever I go there tomorrow.

The game has cutscenes. But you're right, the last thing we want is a connected world with minimalist storytelling. Look at how that strategy worked for Dark Souls.

I haven't played Dark Souls so I don't really understand the point you're making, but I'm gonna assume that's sarcasm?


And of course it will have cutscenes, but I wonder how many of them will be missable. After all, you supposedly can go to Ganon in like ten minutes if you want to. Whether or not you can actually beat him, though, or if visiting him affects the story in any way, I have no idea.


I don't think what I put in spoiler tags is something you guys don't know, since it has been known since E3, but you can view it at your own risk.

Not saying change is a bad thing, but what fans expect from a Zelda game is probably different than what they want out of Dark Souls.

Anyway, to answer the open-worldness question, (spoilers in case you don't want to know how the game works at all) the game supposedly starts you out like original LoZ where you can go anywhere, but if you're ever tired of exploring you can activate a waypoint to lead you to the story stuff

I'll jusr say this: you said a lack of exposition and narrative no longer flies when it absolutely does, and in the case of Dark Souls it was actually the answer to a problem they were having where people would skip the cutscenes and get lost. Just like Johnny Walmart doesn't finish Mass Effect, Johnny Walmart skips the cutscenes in Zelda.

I can't really argue the details since, again, I don't know Dark Souls, but I also feel what Ultima said - they're different series, so there are different expectations. Maybe it flies for Dark Souls, but I don't think Zelda would be the same without it. I don't want the game to do too much hand-holding, but a little something to push it along is a good thing, so hopefully BotW finds that balance.

You can't skip cutscenes in any Zelda game except TP (and maybe also BotW, I don't know). While that's not a good thing either, it makes it so it's kind of hard to miss objectives and get lost.

on the other hand, it did wonders for Shadow of the Colossus. I don't think BotW is going as extreme as that, but it'll likely be somewhere in between the two. no chance that BotW is as dark as Dark Souls

They got some dang voice acted cutscenes in this one. I'm not worried about the story.

Dark Souls is 1000x better than Shadow of the Colossus.

SotC might be a good comp for how Zelda could handle minimalist storytelling though. Dark Souls lets you go and find the story if you want it, but SotC is at least still a story driven game to an extent while Souls is mechanics and setting driven.

I can't remember if I mentioned it before, but I actually own Dark Souls. Maybe when I finish all this Nintendo shit I'll actually play it

I've read a few Zelda reviews just to get a sense of what it's like, and it's supposed to be 20ish hours to get through the main story. I spoilered it in case you guys didn't wanna know. It's supposed to be a little meatier than the average open-world game, so there won't be as much empty space.

Are you guys all getting Wii U versions? I'd be surprised if anyone is picking up a Switch already.

If I was watching a sporting event with some people and the play by play guy said this I would be like "haha that's so weird. Haha why would he say that. It's not even true haha. This is funny to me because it's weird to say and not true, and here's why"

Well, I just started playing BotW! I'm so excited, but I had to take a break to eat, hence why I'm posting instead of playing. Also, I'm super intimidated by the vastness, but that's a good thing.

Yeah. It's pretty... wild. But really it is. Immediately it's unlike any Zelda before it.

I've put in a couple hours. Very interesting and enjoyable so far. Lots to do and discover.

Tonight is Minnesota's new MLS team's first game. I'm trying to figure out which teams to hate. My friend said I should hate the LA Galaxy because they're the Patriots of the MLS. I think I dislike Seattle just because, and I'm already starting to hate Real Salt Lake because they pronounce their name "re-all" like some jackass wannabe Europeans.

I've been having some issues with my left joycon de-syncing, but apparently you have to do a full shutdown of the console to get it to work.... so whenever I feel like playing again, hopefully it's fixed. I thought I did that earlier (though not knowing about this alleged sync fix), but maybe I just put it in sleep mode.

I'm still getting used to how to use this thing - both the console and the controls in Zelda. There's so much more to it than any other Zelda games, so I keep pressing the wrong buttons all the time

I've read about those joycon problems but luckily haven't encountered any yet. And yeah it has a ton of inputs. For some reason it seems easier to play in handheld mode than docked, at least for me.

I watched Game Grumps play it for about 45 minutes.

Surprise, they suck.

In a weird way it reminds me of Arkham a little because you have so many things you can do that you sometimes have to think about the button input before you do. It feels good to play though. It also feels surreal to play it in a lot of ways. Playing a new Zelda probably always feels a little surreal but playing one where you can just climb a mountain because you want to see what's on top is crazy. It's also crazy that you can play it on the bus or whatever.

Is this how you experience all new games now?

I'm not really one to talk, since I still watch them sometimes, but I always hate when they play new games, because it makes no sense to me. I tend not to be interested in watching LPs of games I haven't played, but if it's a game I'm interested in, I'd rather play it for myself.


And/or I'm just jealous that I don't get games sent to me early and for free so that I can play them poorly and be unfunny on camera

No, I didn't watch them play RE7 for a while because I was going to play it, and I still haven't watched them play The Last Guardian because it's in my backlog. I'm not planning on getting a Switch anytime soon, though, and I don't have a Wii U, so I figured I might as well experience Zelda a little bit since It'll be years before I play it. And knowing the Grumps, they won't make enough progress to spoil me anyway (and I was right).

Don't worry @DorkLink once every streamer gets fired for antisemitism we will be able to make millions playing video games and going "ah!" and "oh no"

Yeah, I guess if you aren't going to play it anytime soon, you might as well watch it now anyways since you're probably bound to hear spoilers at some point. I'm too fanatical about Zelda to wait for it, and even things that aren't plot spoilers, I'm trying to avoid. It's fun discovering all the different little things you can do, which I'd rather learn about on my own than see somebody else do. That isn't something I felt for previous Zelda games, but Link's abilities had basically stayed the same since OoT, so there wasn't much to ruin.


On the other hand, I remember I didn't play WW until almost ten years after it came out, so I had heard the twist several times, but it didn't really ruin it for me.

I watched Logan on Saturday, and apart from a few details, I thought it was a really good movie. It's the only X-Men movie I'd recommend and it has almost nothing to do with X-Men.

I saw it too. It's definitely really good. It's also brazenly defiant of previous movie canon, which is cool. I do generally like the X-Men movies though.
