Oh my god. I just watched the video myself and just now realized that if you shoot the Rival while he has his sword out he reflects your shots. I don't know how I didn't figure that out. I thought he was just...swinging pellets at you or something!

Man, 2007. That's some legitimate B8 history right there.

Although here's a tease for the characters, because I'm undecided on games.

1.) Yuri Hyuga (Shadow Hearts)
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
2.) Tidus (Final Fantasy X)

I miss Heroic Mario character/games lists that changed every other day.

SH1 was good, but I had my complaints about it. It's better than FtNW at least. I've softened on shloop shloop splat but man was that jarring when I first played it, also I ended up having to listen to it several times for some reason I don't remember.

It's a more traditional anime style kind of cast, but they were a good deal more memorable.

Going from Bleed 2 to Torment 2 is nice. Get to come down from an adrenaline rush high with lots of talking and reading and words.

It's pretty great so far, although I have some complaints:

-The feel is a bit too close to Planescape. You're a nigh-immortal being with amnesia who is learning about his past lives and remembering random vivid memories of what he's done. That's a simplification but it does feel like it's hitting a lot of the same beats Planescape did. Planescape is also 15+ years old so this isn't an incredibly fair complaint, they're allowed to re-use a concept after that long.

-The skill check system is kind of bad. You can expend points to make percentage chances on stuff like Persuasion better but there's really limited points so going with the default low percentage chance is forced onto you. And if you miss a check a lot of times you just...miss out on content. The game said early on that is was okay to miss a check because interesting stuff would happen anyway but that's a total lie. I find myself just reloading saves until it works.

so on the weekend the kids were passing the controller back and forth, but they both wanted to get turns in and came up with a compromise: if you die, your turn is up. Julian lasted five minutes, going down to a swarm of bats. Sophia grabs the controller and with the widest grin I've ever seen proceeds to run away from every hazard for the next 90 minutes as she explores all the mystery of Hyrule.

horizon goes places

some really profound, incredible places that a triple a game hasn't taken me in a very long time

there are things about the story and the things i'm uncovering that are just blowing my mind

they address everything, every question i've had about the world as it is now and why it is

god i hope more people play this game after zelda, persona, mass effect, etc. it's GOTY material in so many ways

This is my guess too.

I'm guessing the gameplay is gonna be close to Goat, but the mediocre story will bring it down.

aspects of the world before, the things that were done to get to the point of collapse and the things that were done to mitigate it. they're fascinating.

mid-to-late game spoilers

what the zero dawn project actually was, the full reveal of Gaia and her systems, it's done and executed so exceptionally well. the character building, all of the flavor dialogue of the alpha scientists. the video from the general explaining operation enduring victory, the video from elisabet outlining the project. the data log detailing one's choices of going out and dying on your feet or seeing to the nurse, who would administer to you -- aka kill you.

late late game spoilers

elisabet's sacrifice, ted's betrayal and the way they bring it together. sylens' true nature and the data logs within his workshop. elisabet's sacrifice is the thing that made me tear up.

more than anything, the vocal performances and the pacing are just so top notch that they bring everything home. that cutscene that came out prerelease that had everyone scared could not be more misrepresentative of what this game has to offer from a story and dialogue aspect. lip-syncing issues are still there, but easy to look past.

the craziest thing about Blaster Master is that Sunsoft decided the goofy, partially contradictory american story of the high school kid and his mutated pet frog going underground was better than the Japanese sci-fi story and used it for all future games. They also decided that the original characters and concepts made up for a Scholastic Books novelization for kids were also canon, and used them in sequels too.

Yep, that's what I was talking about when I mentioned the game doing soft sci-fi well. And how the mystery is all in the past, it has already happened, and you're in the right place at the right time to piece it all together. It's very cool. It's something Gone Home excels at as well.

I wasn't in love with Sylens' character. He exists as a foil to Aloy and to dish out plot when the game needs him to. There's not much there. But I'm not going to complain about Lance Reddick chewing up scenes.

the game was just in a Humble Monthly to coincide with Long War 2, and piggybacking off that to announce a new expansion makes sense. the game has done really well on PC and modding is starting to take off.

I'm hearing that Blaster Master Zero, of all games, has the best use of HD Rumble so far? I'm playing it on 3DS so I have to go without. I wish it were a little bit more difficult but otherwise this is definitely the best game since the original. The first area sticks fairly close to the original game but with some added bits, but after that greater liberties are taken. Some boss fights even occur in the sidescrolling areas now.

I think there's a lot of potential in Emily Is Away. the first game is more of a demo than a fleshed out game. there's room to develop the characters into actual people, rather than one-dimensional representations of youth.

I'm currently trying to add money to my Japanese Nintendo account and boy is it a pain. Apparently there's a workaround if you use a Japanese 3DS, which I have, but I haven't used it since I got a new router and for some reason it won't connect.

Aw man. Apparently I missed out on a ton of flavor text in Tides of Numenara by not picking the right class/ability early on. Not sure why they would arbitraily gate something so important for a game that is all about the text. Considering restarting but I'm already 12 hours in. Might just stop for now, this poked a hole in my momentum big time.

I played a few games with numbers earlier this week. it's not bad. maybe if we weren't in peak games I'd give it more of a chance but it's hard to find time for a MP game I like less than at least six other MP games I play with some regularity even when I'm not consumed with calendar-eating behemoths like Zelda and the looming Persona 5.

Nah I went for that. What I missed is the Sense Mind ability, which you can only get by picking the Nano class and selecting the ability at the very beginning of the game. Didn't even know it existed!

Ended up powering through the new file while listening to podcasts and stuff. It goes a lot faster when you're skipping most of the text. The Sense Mind ability is already paying off, I noticed a lot of new stuff and my impression of several characters has entirely changed thanks to it.
