Not really too shocking.

Anytime a dude is straight up asked "Are you gay?" then proceeds to avoid the question, "well, you know, that's a little personal, I uh, don't feel that's important."

He's gay.

I never understood the thing about this being old news. I never watch CNN, but I was aware of who Anderson Cooper was, and at least from what I've seen of him I always thought he was cool. So yeah, him being gay is news to me. Doesn't affect my opinion of him, though.

Am I the only one who's never once been shocked when a gay celebrity has come out of the closet? Like, I'm not saying I expect every celebrity to do it; I'm just saying all of them that have done it have been pretty obviously gay to me.

But whatever.

I'm not shocked when a gay celebrity comes out of the closet, because being gay isn't something to be shocked about, and also because who cares if a celebrity is gay. It'd only be interesting if it was something REALLY out of left field. Like if Rush Limbaugh came out as gay. That would be amazing.

That's what I'm saying though. Like if...Brock Lesnar came out as gay, I'd be like "Whoa! Never saw that one coming!"

The ones that have I just say "Well, yeah, that's not surprising at all"

I dunno, I don't really watch Anderson Cooper or anything but he just struck me as neutral. Like, he could've gone either way as far as I knew.

Totally-out-of-left-field coming outs don't happen because there's a reason they'd be totally out of left field. I mean let's face it, gay dudes don't exactly masquerade as macho, gay-hating straight dudes too often. And it's a lot harder for people who don't appear to be gay to come out as gay.

If gay people want to be treated the same as everyone else, they should probably stop acting like it's such a huge deal whenever some celebrity comes out of the closet.

uhhh are you blaming gay people for the media making a big deal out of this? and it isn't even really the medias fault....it is the fact that if you post a story 'anderson cooper comes out as gay' it gets a million more hits than '20 people killed in syria' or whatever.

I don't really dig the whole gay pride thing, but I understand it. It's a defense mechanism. It's making a statement in a still pretty anti-gay world that you're cool with being gay. My problem with it is that it can seem like gays are trying to stand out and separate themselves from everyone else. I don't like to make a big deal out of it like that. I think being gay is awesome, I wouldn't change it, and I guess I'm proud of it but only because I like myself in general. Not because I think being gay is special.

But I think the whole gay pride thing still has its place and my hope is really that it won't be needed some day.

Are you sure about that? I recently read an article about how Americans WAY over-estimate the number of gay people. The average American, when asked to estimate, estimates around 20% but the actual number is 3%. I might not have that EXACTLY right but I'll bet you it's no higher than 5.

Yeah, this is what I mean by hoping that gay pride eventually becomes unnecessary. Gays should be able to be gay without fear of persecution. It'll happen eventually. When it does, only then can being gay stop being a big deal.

I'm sure you read a lot of articles that say interesting things.

3% means only 1 in 33 people are gay. It's more than that even if you only count people who are publicly out of the closet.
