You thinking it's overrated beyond everything else doesn't make it true, bro.
Organized religion is objectively the most overrated, pointless entity in human history. You will not find a spiritual connection in a 501(c)(3) charity house.
Of all people, I can't believe you are acting like I need an "imo" qualifier on things I say
(and no, ff/ff7 is still more overrated than that. People think FF7 did that thing that sometimes happens where something is overrated, and then becomes underrated because of how many people are moaning about how overrated it is. I agree that that can happen to certain things - it's happened to a few football players that I can think of - but... no, as long as the reaction to FF7 is not absolute vitriol from every possible angle, it's overrated)
That's a very, very cold and scientific view. Any anger or fire I had to direct at FF7 or the majority of the FF series in general disappeared a long time ago. Now it's a very considered statement.
(My hatred for FF5, however, still burns with the passion of about 48 suns. Most of the suns died out over the course of the last almost-year, but there's still some rage left over)

The really neat thing about FFVII is that it's actually in the top five greatest games I've played and deserves all the praise it can get, aside from anything deviantArt has ever contributed to the subject of course.

From: LeonhartFour | #054 From: XIII_rocks | #053 That's a very, very cold and scientific view LOL It's true though.
Whereas in like 04/05 my hatred of that game/series was still raw and developing, 7 years later it's just boiled down to cold rationale. Like, I won't go on sweary rants about why I can't stand it and why I think Big Rigs is better. I'm just comfortable with the fact that I think it's worthless garbage.
To use another example that occasionally comes up in b8c, the GotD match between Golden Sun and San Andreas. At the time and for quite a while afterwards I ranted about how terrible a result this was for an otherwise-"improving" site (taste-wise, anyway - stuff like the rise of Snake in 06 and going as far as to literally beat Sephiroth, for instance). Now, 2 years later, I still think it was the worst result in contest history (Tifa > The Boss is pretty bad, though), but I'll state that very calmly and evenly. The fact that I was...disproportionately angry about it doesn't change how much it sucked. And the fact that I was disproportionately vicious about the FF series doesn't change how much it sucks, either.
Oh, if you're using a really picky definition of scientific, then sure.
I mean it as in it's thought-out and rationalized. I'm not saying that to "troll", I'm not saying that while blowing a gasket. It's a very rational and honest statement of my viewpoint. I'm just showing how your "take it easy, bro" is redundant.
Uh, I don't know what's currently going on in the topic, but I'll go back to the original question.
I've always enjoyed contests. The board is really lively and there are so many nice things going on. Even Rivalry Rumble had some really good moments and I still enjoyed the high activity. It's not as fun as it was a few years ago (2010 was the best contest for me), but it hasn't lost any magic yet. Only problem is that Link is growing insane with strength. Just any match with him will be pretty boring. He doesn't even get really good blowouts like 2002 Mega Man, because of the high anti-votes. He just gets some solid 60-70% against characters.

Rank 9, Dr. Peace? Pffft, nothing compared to Rank 1, Dr_Football! when thinking of Krystal, does GMUN's pants get overcrowded? ~ GMUN
I'd say 2k5 was the last time I felt "the magic." However, each new gimmick after that has taken more away from it with RR just about being the last straw.
Hmm. Maybe when it started getting gimmicky and silly. L-Block? I dunno. The contests were never serious, but I think random Tetris pieces winning kind of took it out of the contests.
When people rallied for Zelda winning Game of the Decade.
Really think this is the right answer.
Though it's hard to know at this point since it's been so long since we've had a real contest. Gimmick contests might've killed it more than this. Gotta see a real bracket and see how I feel about it.
-- No problem! This is a cute and pop genocide of love!
I think once female/villains brackets came in, the real magic was gone. To me it came back with four ways, though I think we can't always have them. I feel like a cycle of characters/games/4waychar/4waygame would be good, maybe trade out four ways for "of this generation/of this decade" type contests as warrants.

Donny: Are they gonna hurt us, Walter? Walter: No, Donny. These men are cowards.
The only thing amazing about it was SOTC's run, and that would've been way more cool if it actually charged through horribly overrated games like Majora's Mask and Brawl, or through dumb games I'm not interested in like Fallout 3 and FFX.
Instead, it had to victimize MGS. Why, just why?
Yes Ulti, I've played SOTC, and it's one of my favorite games of all time. You can officially brand me someone with horrible taste in games now.
2006 killed it for me. As bad as Summer 2004 and the villains contest were, I still enjoyed Summer 2005. 2006 marked the beginning of contest gimmicks, which not only caused its own bracket to be crammed full of complete fodder (thanks to the asinine male/female idea) but served as an admission that these contests had run their course. Four-ways were an interesting idea, but I just plain wasn't interested by then, since the so-called "magic" was gone. Plus, Summer 2005 would have served perfectly well as a sendoff to the idea.
How to bring the magic back: Game contest. 1v1 polls. Bracket seeded normally and not organized by year, generation, system, or anything like that. Throw FF7 and the N64 Zelda games into a Tournament of Champions. If this doesn't get decent vote totals, we can all admit that contests are truly dead.
My first contest was 2003, it made a big impact on me and I was at my most interested post-2003 and before 2004 began. I stayed enjoying them from 04-06 although it had lost a bit of that spark. 07 and the whole L-Block 4-way business was the breaking point for me, when it couldn't be taken seriously as a measure of character strength and all the RNG in 4-way bracket placement deciding things my interest waned a lot. I keep an eye on stuff since but I could honestly not recall a single match post 2007 off the top of my head, I remember almost every part of the bracket from 2003-2006.
This has been talked about at length in the stats topics before, but 1v1 contests are never really going to have the same magic that they used to because 85% of the characters/games are known quantities and we have a pretty good grasp of all the trends these days.
We either need an entirely different contest format, or an entirely different pool of entrants.
Also most of you people are old now, so there's that.
