I'm not overly familiar with houston - just been down there a couple times going down to Galveston. I know DFW has had a few hate crimes around lately, including at least one sexuality-related though

Pretty much unless it is a major city or international melting pot kind of area, texas is...a bit silly. Like, the area I grew up in was a military town so we have a lot of korean and german and all sorts of fun cultures But travel 30 minutes in any direction and it becomes hicksville...

Anyway, I can't really comment much on this kind of behavior as...it kinda isn't a thing limited by region. People get killed for any number of reason, and while it is easy to speculate based on known factors, they may or may not be a contributing factor...

it's unlikely to be a robbery gone bad. most thieves are cowards and wouldn't dare approach a group of two or more. it is also unlikely that they would shoot them, since a robber is in it for the money and (generally) doesn't want blood on his hands.

it is also incredibly unlikely to be a psychopath, or else there would be an ongoing chain of murders.

it's not a sex crime, they weren't raped and they weren't prostitutes.

besides that I can't think of a lot of reasons to randomly shoot two people. easy to assume it's a hate crime. you don't kill people without a reason, even if your reasoning is bad.

it's horrible regardless, but still.

You do often kill people without a reason for killing them specifically, just that they were in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Also, occam's razor doesn't work like that. The problem with the article is that the basis of the article is that "we have no idea why anyone would want to kill them" but then they push the gay hate crime angle so much. That's not occam's razor, that's wishful thinking, which is perfectly understandable since it makes for great news, but I think you'll agree it's also terrible. This applies to what cyclo was saying, too.
