And no one cared about the Caps before Ovechkin

lol I just thought of something: I want the Coilers to be cared about, but then again I don't. If they are cared about, then that means they are a good team, but then again, I don't want our fanbase to be pittsburgh-like

Smittie is a good guy. I was kinda sad to see him leave the Kings (although he was making way too much money so it was a good move).

And people didn't start caring about the Capitals because of Ovechkin, they started caring about the Capitals when they started winning. Those two events are semi-related but not completely!

Martin Brodeur hiring an agent to test free agency since the Devils have been unable to commit to a contract offer to him because of their financial situation. Uhhh, yeah, goodbye Zach Parise.

If Brodeur goes, too.....I might honestly not watch the season.

As much as I hate the Devils, that really sucks. They're doing the Dallas thing of getting rid of their franchise player right before retirement, and to me that is a load of crap.

It sounds like they still intend to bring him back, and of course Brodeur wants to stay, and I think this agent hiring is a just-in-case move. I'm really unaware of the financial troubles the team is in right now. It also seems like Parise is still priority #1, and after that falls into place, they will turn to Brodeur. Maybe they just want to have a better idea of where their budget stands (signing or not signing Parise, and if so, how much) before offering Brodeur a contract.

I'm sure Brodeur will be patient with them though. Barring someone throwing a ridiculous contract his way, probably the only team that could wrestle him away is Montreal, to play in his home city.

Tweet from a beat writer:

My understanding is there will be room for both Parise and Brodeur in Devils' budget, but Parise is first piece of the puzzle.

On the Ducks front, I like the Allen signing but not the Souray signing (why didn't we just keep Visnovsky?). The good news is that both guys give us some size and toughness on the back end which we have been lacking for a few years.

Brodeur re-signed for 2 years, $9 million. Thank God.

Apparently the Devils were only offering one year before free agency, but Brodeur wanted a two year deal so he wouldn't have to deal with questions about retirement all season long again, so he tested the market. Once the Devils stepped up and offered two years, it was done. Of course the money was never an issue with him, the only way he was going to go anywhere was if someone else offered him two years and the Devils didn't.

Now we await Parise. Then our next priority becomes Bryce Salvador, hopefully he doesn't make a decision before Parise does, because we're going to want him back, and especially if Parise goes we should be coming to him with a competitive offer. But it seems like he has at least a few decent offers on the table already that he's deciding on, and I doubt we've offered anything yet.

Johan Hedberg also re-signs for two years.

Brodeur in speaking with Parise seems confident Parise will stay. Also a big reason Brodeur wanted a two-year deal was possibility of another lockout looming.

Really wish we could've moved Martin's contract off too. Then we'd have a legit shot at both Parise and Suter. I have this sinking feeling that Parise's gonna re-sign with the Devils and then Suter will go to Detroit or something and we'll have missed out on both fronts.

Some quotes from Parise talking to a reporter in Minnesota:

"so much more than the money. That plays a very small part in it."
"so much harder a decision than I thought it would be."

Still no timetable.

Parise's from Minneapolis, discussing things with his family, so talking to a Wild reporter is no indication of where he's signing. Still, if money is not much of an issue, that would lead me to believe both the Devils and Wild would have to be big teams in the decision, and maybe some other team who he thinks might have a brighter future.
