http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nhl-puck-daddy/ondrej-pavelec-landed-5-19-5-million-deal-213332458--nhl.html

"Let's say Carey Price is at 7 years and $6 million a year. Devan Dubnyk's going to hit $3 million. Tuukka Rask is going to hit $3 million. Cory Schneider is going to hit $3 million. There's a new wave of goalies taking over No. 1 starting jobs in the NHL from the older guard. Between those goalies, statistically and in experience at a No. 1 goalie, Pavs should be slotted under Price," said [Pavelec's agent] Walsh.

$3M backups.

Those goalies all have better stats than Pav. The only thing Pav has over them is that he's already a starter. I don't think the deal is that bad, though. The Jets overpaid by $1.5-2M, but they're not going to hit the ceiling any time soon, so it's not going to cripple them.

Yeah, the Jets will be fine. If the alternative is a Mason / Gustavsson duo, I'll take Pav at 3.9.

This is a funny idea. Burke would never pull something like this, though.

I hope some teams do try to woo Schneider with an offer sheet, though. Vancouver will obviously match it, and it wouldn't be anywhere close to the ~$4.7M required to go one step above just being a 1st- and 3rd-rounder as compensation.

Then there's the chance they do somehow get stuck with Luongo and you might actually get a solid young goalie for pretty cheap.

If he did offer that deal, and the Canucks didn't match, Burke would surrender four first round picks for Schneider. Burke isn't that crazy,

The averaged salary taken for compensation is the first five years of the contract, not the entire term. $40M over 8 years would trigger a 4 first round pick compensation.

I would have thought Price would be between 5 and 5.5.

That'd have him with a lower (or equal) cap hit than Rinne, Lundqvist, Luongo, Bryz, Ward, Miller, Backstrom, Fleury and Kipper.

The Pavelic deal is fine, could even be a good deal for the Jets in a few years. Price at $6 million is fine as well - he IS one of the best goalies in the league.

Quick is getting LESS THAN TWO with two years left on his deal!

Quick was an RFA when he signed that deal and wasn't what is he is now. He'll be getting $5-7 mil per after next year.

Yeah like the Ducks. We have a lot of holes to fill and a ton of cap room (although we do have an internal budget of around $55-57 mil). Murray must plan on spending a ton in free agency even though it's a relatively weak UFA class (and let's be realistic Parise and Suter have zero interest in coming to Anaheim).

Well I'm going under the assumption that he's taking the year off and would you want Tim Thomas next year? Because otherwise you're pretty much saying you'd be ok playing with an empty net!

I think even he'd get pretty old for this.

Any of you guys familiar with the Pouliot kid we drafted? Everything I see says he's a great offensive defenseman capable of running the powerplay and leading the breakout, but needs to work on his defense. Doesn't really tell me much, like how far away he is from starting at the back for us.

Speaking of that, I know almost nothing about Brenden Sutter, but his numbers look pretty solid from last year. I'm still a little upset at Staal being gone but almost everyone I've seen has said we abused Carolina in the deal, so I'm good with it. I hope Staal gets to play top line Center down there because I bet his production will increase even though he's not surrounded by Sid/Geno just coz he's going to be THE GUY. He's got the quality to do it, anyway.

Sutter is pretty much the ideal 3rd-line center. He's fast, is good defensively, and is very solid on the PK. And he costs how much a guy playing that role should be making.

As for Pouliot, don't expect him to play for at least a couple years.
