Did you make sure to capture something in every available area so far? It's a shame you didn't catch a Sawk or a Throh, my Sawk handled Lenora with absolutely no trouble.

At first I didn't do any grinding until I lost 2 in 1 battle

Oshie was killed by the Roggenrola I caught, critical hit.
Roxanne was killed by trainer's Bide, opponent had a sliver of health.
Jeff was a sacrifice, Purrloin sand-attack worked wonders against me (3 misses) and then the one time I get a hit was after it assisted Bide >_>), same trainer
Susan was killed by critical Quick Attack.

Also, Route 2 Lillipup was killed by a critical before I could catch it ;_;

But I'm grinding now!

I tried a Nuzlocke... went great at first, then I got to Lenora and the game unleashed all the bad luck it was saving up on me at once.

Herdier one hits Pansage with critical Take Down. First loss of the game.
My own Herdier is sent in, goes down because of bite causing flinch and then critting.
Pignite goes in, barely survives another critical Take Down and kills it with Arm Thrust.

Send out Roggenrola to survive Retaliate, which of course crits anyway. Sturdy activates, Mud Slap, Crunch doesn't miss, bye Roggenrola :(

Next up is Throh, who... gets hit with Hypnosis immediately. Chesto Berry activates and Watchog takes a Vital Throw, but survives with something around two hit points and uses Hypnosis again. (Remember Mud Slap? Neither does the game!) Leer, Leer, Retaliate, Throh bites it.

Pignite comes back in and holy crap quick claw activates. Good fortune? Flame Charge... misses.

Flame Charge - Fire, Physical, 50 base power, 100% accuracy.

I haven't played Gen V yet, but what type advantage is better for the early game?

I love Bulb, but I basically chose him also due to the fact that while I can only catch Bug and Normals, I can still kill Brock and Misty.

Well, the first few gym leaders don't care about your starter's type.

Though I will say that the Grass starter, despite the awesome design, has pretty much bad stats and moves, and there aren't many good water types.

That's some crazy string of events, GTM.

I tried to do a Nuzlocke where I could only use shops once, you can't save, there was no trading, and you had to endure the game in one whole sitting. I accidentally removed the cartridge; game over.

For White/Black?

The Fire and Water are much better the the grass simply due to Fire and Water types being kinda hard to get. Fire has a couple of good ones kinda early. Water has like nothing for a long while tho. Oshawott is pretty good just for that reason.

nuzlockes are kinda dumb because it doesn't impose any sort of limits on the most unbalancing factor in an role playing games- level gains/experience points.

They come down to tests of patience- how willing are you to spend unreasonable amounts of time leveling up your pokemon, perhaps unnecessarily?

Yeah I tried nuzlocking White once and it basically went the same way.

Higher crit rates makes them painful. Went back and did other games instead that don't give critical hits every 3 attacks.

haha the friend I'm playing with, we have a no dupes rule as determined by the pokeball symbol, we get infinite tries until a pokemon with no pokeball shows up

he had a gurdurr and a boldore, so he traded with his brother to evolve them (we said to allow this beforehand)

he made it to twist mountain, and said "I already had the pokeball symbols for woobats, gurdurrs and boldores so I ended up with a drilbur"

I questioned how he got his woobat and he didnt know, and we eventually figured out thats what his brother traded him to evolve his pokemon

technically legal drilbur for him!
