Seth doesn't have a say in game design, I'm pretty sure, and if he does it's absolutely minimal.

Frankly I think he just got sick of having to pay lip service to policies he didn't necessarily agree with. Hell, I remember back when UMvC3 came out he was the one that had to deal with the brunt of the Mega Man BS, and SFxT probably din't do him any favors.

Though you're right. Assuming Ono is still sick, Capcom's pretty much brought us right back to where we were in '97.

Ono is not sick anymore, he's been back in the office for weeks. He's not working in the fighting game division now though.

So it's basically the same thing, it's just that he's permanently away from fighting games.

I hope he still does commentary at EVO. As for Capcom, I think they can recover from SFxT. SSFIV AE and UMvC3 are really strong anchors for the FGC. They can carry the load for as long as needs be until we get SFV.

Seth is a pretty important guy in Capcom's fighting game devolpement, he's the reason Storm and Sentinel even appeared in Marvel vs Capcom 3.

And the Capcom fighting game crash was in the early 2000's after CvS2 and the CPS3 being retired due to losing a ton of money for Capcom.

Yeah, it's most likely this. Can't imagine putting up with all the crap he's gone through. Remember when all the new characters got leaked for UMvC3? Dude looked extremely angry about it, put had to put on a face to satisfy the company image. Same thing with numerous other perceived mistakes of Capcom: Megaman, SFxT, UMvC3... just non-stop complaints and p.r. spin.

With the way Capcom rolls they don't rely on anchors unless it's Resident Evil. They refuse to make a new Mega Man X game because of how badly X7 and Command Mission bombed even through those games are nearly a decade old, and they killed their fighting games in the early 2000's because of the CPS3 even through SFA3, CvS2 and MvC 1/2 were extremely popular games.

SFxT could end up the game that causes the next fighting game crash, Capcom had high expectations and a long life planned (just look at how much focus they put on the Vita version which is still months away) but the game died in 3 months, and they hate when something major bombs.

I think the defining moment is when Seth was confronted about the Mega Man easter egg on the Days of Future Past stage in UMvC3 where he basically had to apologize for somebody else's trolling attempts. And of course, trying to spin gems into anything but game wreckers.

Damn, that's sad. But unsurprising, to be completely honest. Capcom is a pretty awful company to work for, from what I've heard.

I hope for the best for him, and it's very sad and probably true that they won't get anybody who could replace his presence.

Ono is actually working on a superproject which he wants to save fighting games with. He's probably exaggerating a bit, but it's definitely something he's super passionate about and a way to screw with Capcom while still helping the community he loves.

I doubt that, Seth's written entire essays about why 3D games aren't as good as 2D ones. It sounds like he's got something bigger in store.
