just let the system determine the output resolution, so that when a new, more powerful console comes along, it can easily run the game at a higher resolution.
there is no reason we should have to play ps1 games in sd. they would look so much better in hd.
and when I play today's games 10 years from now, I don't want to see jaggies.
it must be, because otherwise it would seem that a very small tweak to the program that runs ps1 games on a ps3 could run all ps1 games at any resolution they want!
They can up the resolution on those. Popular emulators do with hardware video rendering. It's just a deficiency of commercial emulation. It's very doable.
Old games are set to their original resolution when played on new systems because - shocker! They look best in their original, intended resolution!
All you get from upping the resolution of old games is a lot more clarity on the horribly low-poly models and horribad textures which are normally covered up nicely by the low resolution.

Nope. You are completely wrong.
Games look far better in high resolutions. Game companies are just too lazy to do so with backwards compatibility. Note how the games they release on things like PSN/XBLA are upscaled since people pay for them.

Gotta disagree, I think most games of that era that also had a PC version benefit today from having the PC version, over the release resolution on consoles. Even PS2 games, I know replaying GTA Vice City on PC today is a much better experience. It would be kinda cool if 3D console games always had that flexibility of PC games.
At least from 360 forward games can all be displayed at a nice resolution.

This topic has to be a joke, but I have learned not to underestimate the stupidity of some b8ers
I think it's not as stupid as you think. If console games had settings in them like PC versions which allowed for higher resolution and such, like how PCs have, then things like the "HD" versions of say MGS, Silent Hill, God of War etc wouldn't be necessary. You'd just pop in the game into say your 360 or PS3 and it could display it at a higher resolution since it's on better hardware.
Sure this wouldn't make the textures better, but most of the textures in these HD ports are the same anyway. But none the less, playing a 3D game at a higher resolution does indeed look better.
Pretty much, this would just in a way be consoles working more like PCs, though it'd require forethought for the next generation, and backward compatibility, and a lot of wackiness. But it's certainly not a stupid notion.
