I can't find any position I'd consider "middle" that I can hit L and R with.

Like, I can barely hit the upper c button from a middle position. Holding the wings of it feels like a perfectly natural position, and puts my fingers exactly where they need to be.

I am not understanding all you middle people

There are like zero games that require the use of the control stick and the L button. Only games that could be controlled with the D-pad used L. Games that only used the control stick ignored L, and games that only used the D-pad ignored Z. That's how the controller was designed to work, so developers could choose what setup they liked best.

I have no idea how you could have trouble hitting the R or C buttons. You're already holding the right side of the controller with your right hand, it doesn't take herculean effort to reach those buttons.

The distance between the middle grip and the R button is longer than my entire hand I think

The middle seems right based on the analog getting much more use than the d-pad, but I can't really remember.

Oh, I swear to God. The first post has a picture of how you hold the controller. There are almost zero games for the system that use the control stick and the D-pad/L button. You hold the middle with your left hand, and the right side with your right hand. Perfect control.

This might just be a motor skills thing.

You'd have to physically show me exactly how you hold it that way before I ever get it. Words are never going to convey to me exactly how you hold the thing that way. I couldn't tie a pair of shoes until I was 13 because my motor skills have been bad since birth. This just isn't registering to me, and then I revert to what's natural.

All I know is holding the wings in each hand is one of the most comfortable positions I've ever had with a controller and I can use that thing for hours with no issue that way.

First thing I tried. Hands feel imbalanced and the position doesn't feel natural.

Basically holding it like that bothers my hands and will eventually bring them discomfort.

I technically have never held a pencil the right way, so its not like I'm surprised!

That was when I was attempting to put my right hand on the middle

My left hand being there doesn't prevent me from hitting those buttons, it just feels "incorrect" to my hands.

seriously, it's why I love the N64 controller

dualshock, using the analog sticks is uncomfortable since it's in the secondary position

gcn/xbox, using dpads are uncomfortable because they're in secondary position

N64 has two placements so you can have analog in primary position for 3d games, and dpad in primary position for 2d games. so no matter what type of game you're playing, it's comfortable.

you either use d-pad and L, or control stick + Z, depending on what kind of game you're playing

Agreed. A lot of people criticize the N64 controller because of its weird shape, but it really was well designed when it came to adapting from 2D games to 3D games. No matter whether or not you were playing a 3D game that needed the preciseness of a control stick, or a sidescrolling game that benefited from the reliability of a D-pad, you could hold the controller in a comfortable position either way.

Have always held both sides.

I've tried holding it 'correctly' before and my hands basically end up on top of each others knuckles when I'm playing. I'm tall and have have fairly big hands, though.

Sides feels more natural to me. Don't have to extend any fingers at all to hit any button on the controller.

I should say I have a really uncomfortable time with any DS but the original phat too (3DS too, but it's not AS bad).
