I always held it "correctly" unless I was playing Stadium.

I don't think I had any other games that used the D-Pad so

(And lol L-button. that was absurdly rare as it was)

I think I started by holding the outside grips and later moved to the middle when I realized I was doing it wrong.

Middle right finger rests naturally at the z area holding the right grip

I still have not been able to figure how to to use that controller holding the middle. It seems completely impossible to me.

The first time ever playing I was about 9 and I held on the sides because I didn't know what I was doing. My hands hurt so much when I finished playing and I'm sure we were only at it for about an hour. A while later I figured it out and I realized it wasn't the most terrible controller ever.

Well... it kind of still is, but at least not painful to play.

The N64 controller was pretty cool. The whole point was that you held the middle so you could press the Z button like a gun trigger (that's why it was often called the "Z trigger"). That's what made playing games like Goldeneye and Star Fox so awesome; your fire button was an actual trigger. There are disappointingly few other controllers that feel that way.

I can't find any position I'd consider "middle" that I can hit L and R with.

Like, I can barely hit the upper c button from a middle position. Holding the wings of it feels like a perfectly natural position, and puts my fingers exactly where they need to be.

I can think of Pokemon Stadium's Sandshrew Digs minigame where you mashed L and R

I was totally the best at that, never lost.


Pokemon Stadium was a d-pad game though, so it's one of the few games you hold the left handle

Course that Tug of War ****ed up the analog as much as your palm.

Aside that, I never, at any point, saw or even though of holding it, from the middle.

No wonder people were weary about the N64 control, just like toilets, people were doing it wrong.

That is the exact way I hold it

There are like zero games that require the use of the control stick and the L button. Only games that could be controlled with the D-pad used L. Games that only used the control stick ignored L, and games that only used the D-pad ignored Z. That's how the controller was designed to work, so developers could choose what setup they liked best.

I have no idea how you could have trouble hitting the R or C buttons. You're already holding the right side of the controller with your right hand, it doesn't take herculean effort to reach those buttons.

But my right middle finger naturally rests ON the z-trigger when I hold the right wing.

I don't even need to stretch or anything, it lands right on the trigger. The dimensions work perfectly when I hold the right wing in my right hand.


I can't find any way to use half the buttons when I hold it by the middle.
