For reference I'm getting the Hifiman HE-400 headphones, the Schiit Lyr tube amp, and then a DAC, possibly the Bifrost but more-than likely I'll go a cheaper option for that right now.
I'm sure many of you don't understand that but YAY HEADPHONES

Well it depends on which Sony buds he's talking about ... good earbuds (or IEMs, I imagine) can be had for $5 ... not great, mind you ... and those poor children certainly could do better ...
From: Jeff Zero | #008 Decent Headphones For Children Fund because deafness is preferable to abrasiveness True. I'd prefer they go without music than listen to, say, Beats.
From: Wanglicious | #010 man. you must hate me then with my $10-20 Senheisser HD202 headphones Why? Those aren't poor headphones. They perform above their price bracket. Cheap headphones are not an issue. Bad headphones are.
oh. well good then! i basically don't buy headphones more than $30-40, so to me this sort of rig is ridiculous. i mean i prefer ear clips but for some reason those are the hardest ones to find. everyone is either with full headphones or earbuds (terrible) so i get stuck with the former, but some high quality cliips are, alas, a mystery.

As someone who doesn't mind spending a little bit more than average on headphones I'd say $1100 is a bit much. But that's only because my ears aren't all that great and I'm sure most of that equipment would be wasted on me.
I'm sure you're going to love the hell out of it though.

I agree earbuds are terrible. Earbuds are the things thing are really wide and sit outside of the ear canal. IEMs, however, with above-average tips (like foam) are extremely good.
The biggest jump in headphone performance, in my mind, is the jump from $20ish headphones to $100-$250ish headphones.

I'm sure you're going to love the hell out of it though. Well do keep in mind that more than half of the rig is amping and the like. And I don't have the obsession with amps - I don't want to buy multiple amps, test 'em out, etc like I do with headphones. So it's more of a one-time cost that will work with all of my present and future headphones, you know?

My brother has a pair of Beats, I'm not a big fan of them.
i'll keep these headphones in mind, thanks. i don't understand why clipons never caught on because they really are a perfect middle - all the portability of buds, most of the sound of the bigger ones. and more importantly, none of the will-be damage that earbuds will cause.

My brother has a pair of Beats, I'm not a big fan of them. Your brother hates his ears.

There are some portable headphones that are on ear that are great but yeah, I do like clip-ons a lot. I can personally vouch for the EW9 ... they sound so smooth, and now I think I'm going to buy another pair of them. I think I traded mine a couple years back for another pair, but I did like them a lot if you ever decide to make that "jump." Not everybody needs to spend $1100 to make the jump into excellent sound!
I don't think earbuds (IEMs) really cause damage, but what do I know? I also can't speak much to comfort since my main pair are custom molded for my ears.
Hey Digi remember that topic you made a couple months ago about those good earbuds that were on sale for cheap? I bought a pair, and within five minutes of opening the box, they broke when I tried to remove the foam bud from the ear piece. I blame you.

There's excellent warranties through MP4 Nation and I think I did note in the topic that they weren't the most durable earbuds! Especially for $13, but I have never had mine break personally. I've had a pair stolen though. I'd shoot them an email.
From: neonreap | #029 you used to talk up Beats, what happen!
I NEVER talked up the Beats. I used to defend Monster because they've always made good audio equipment (with terribly overpriced cables) but never the Beats specifically. That's where they started going downhill. I'm just afraid they're going to stop producing great IEMs, or as folks seem keen on calling them, earbuds.
From: CalvinbalI | #027 This is how they broke
The foam bud really didn't want to come off. The plastic housing snapped at the seal in my attempts to remove it.
Looking over the thread on HeadFi, that does seem to be the biggest issue with them. You have a warranty, though!
From: Ayuyu | #035 With 1k I'd probably get myself an awesome TV or a new computer.
Or maybe a trip with a bro.
I've already got my computer build set! It comes in at $1200 and personally I don't like huge TVs. I have a nice 27'' Samsung full-HD. My new computer build includes a nice Asus 23'' TV.

Like?
Like buy some sick-ass headphones! You be you girl!
I dunno man, you could buy a new computer with that sort of money, for one. You could literally go on a trip across the Atlantic and spend a few days in (probably) any country.
Course I'm not one to say what one should do with their money. It just bothered me a little.

Why would it bother you? How is a trip any more valuable than headphones? How is a computer? It's a hobby, a passion of mine. Plus I was in the UK and Italy for over two months last year. I'm all traveled out. I'm not spending $1000 to say I did. I'm spending $1000 so I can get hundreds of hours of these things. Thousands, even. I don't get how it can "bother" someone. I mean, the tubes on the amp are rated for 5000 hours apiece.
