no this is the right mindset

the 'blah there's like 4 games of this series already' mindset is selfish and stupid. If you got sick of the series, kudos to you don't buy the next one, there's plenty of other stuff out there. If people want to play their new Mario games why take it away when it does not have an impact on you at all.

inb4 'but sequels ruin the game industry'

yeah sequels (in gaming and entertainment in general) are a recent thing, right

i think there is nothing wrong with enjoying new titles and endless sequels, a good game is a good game. When we see too much of endless sequels, there is a problem though.

I dont think gaming has ever seen an era of "too much" new titles though. Even in its earliest days there were sequels and derivatives of past games. Moneytalks (one of my favorite post 70s/early 80s AC/DC song btw) and sequels generate money

Yeah, I don't really see the problem until it becomes really obvious that they're just milking it. I could play 50 Phoenix Wright games, but as soon as they all start becoming Apollo Justice, I don't need it anymore.

The problem with Apollo Justice wasn't that they were "milking the franchise."

That game has an entirely different set of problems.

This, I wish they would make one every year.

As far as good games go I don't think it matters if it's a new franchise or old. But I get way more excited for sequels.

Making games "until they're bad" is a fine philosophy, and we'd probably have a lot less bad games on the market if everybody did this.

As long as they realize when they've made a bad one and stop, at least

But I don't see "we've made a bad game" as an excuse to stop. You can make one bad game, and then make great games after that.

I mean, if Nintendo stopped making Mario games because Sunshine was bad, we wouldn't have the Galaxy games!

Yeah but it shouldn't get to the point that the Sonic games got to either. I love Generations as much as anyone, but it was rough for a while.

Yeah.

But we also end up with things like Call of Duty 918437501892750921875 and things like Spyro the Dragon and Crash Bandicoot getting more sequels than I know of.

They've all had way more than one bad game. Three in a row should be the absolute limit before your series is killed by law. And if the publisher decides to take the rights to a franchise and give it to a new dev team (Treyarch, whoever's churning out Crash and Spyro games since Naughty Dog and Insomniac lost the rights), that counts as two strikes.

so? you dont have to buy it if you dont want to

i mean i could understand wishing theyd stop making bad ones and make more good ones instead, but youre saying they should just kill the whole franchise and what's the point of that

why would you demand that something you werent gonna buy anyway not exist

Sunshine wasn't really "bad" though, it was just not up to Mario standards.

There's still a lot of good stuff in there.

I also have no problem with endless sequels. The worst thing seems to be automatic annual sequels though. Then you're not putting a new iteration out because you genuinely have enough material for it, but rather just because it's "that time of year again."

This is why I don't mind a new Assassin's Creed every year.

I love the series.
I want to play as much as possible.

Then again, I'm not one of those people horribly offended by sports games so my mindset was always "I will take as many sequels as possible if I love the games."

What if you think the 3 games released in the 3 years are also amazing?

Sometimes the extra development time doesn't do much.

WAY too much emphasis on stupid Blue Coins
Kinda weak final boss fight

Beyond those two things I don't see that much wrong with it.

The FLUDD-less platforming sections in particular are an incredible precursor to Galaxy's awesomeness.

Saying Super Mario Sunshine had a "kinda weak" final boss fight is like saying ME3 had a "somewhat controversial" endiing.

Sunshine had potential, but it went largely unfulfilled and if I were to use the term "lazy" to describe any Mario game, it would be this one.

I thought sunshine was decent, but I'll admit that the only thing that I found great in it was the extreme vertical scale of some of the levels. the harbor level triggered my fear of heights, and I liked climbing the seashells in that one level.

for galaxy, at first I was a little bored with it, but then I played galaxy 2 which drew me in a lot more. after that, I liked the first one. weird, but maybe you should try the second when you can get it cheap.

I play platformers for the platforming, I play adventure games for exploration!

Your complaints about FLUDD controls are noted, and even though I disagree I can admit that if they didn't work fluidly for you (pun intended) that it would completely bork the game.

2D games do often have a lot of exploration. Mario games have all the warps and keys and secret doors and such, and Sonic games are not actually about speed and more about alternate paths. Even in games like DKC where there is mostly just one linear path, there are still all the bonus secrets and such that you can find if you explore.
