Je suis toujours serieux. D'autrefois, personne ne me penserait serieusement.
Considered by many the best jRPG of the current generation; great music, surprisingly tolerable voice acting, insanely huge world to explore, and unique gameplay system.

But yes. It's one of the best RPGs of all time.

This post confuses me in a few ways. How are wii games measured differently on the hype scale and also what do you mean "nothing seems to have come of it"? What sort of end product do you expect from hype.
On the question it was very good, in my top 5 games of the generation.
Really good game. It made some extremely good design decisions that you don't see in other RPGs (especially JRPGs). One of the only JRPGs that I feel properly incorporated many WRPG elements while retaining the core JRPG feel. British voices give the game an interesting feel, too.
The biggest flaw I can see in the game is that the story's pacing is bad at times. Gameplay pacing is perfect though.
I played twelve-ish hours and didn't feel the need to play any more. Combat is repetitive, and while the story was alright, the bad graphics made me feel like I'd rather be watching a TV show.
It has a few flaws, but overall, it's one of my favorite games in the past ten years. Great and memorable characters, great combat system, huge explorable world, story's pretty damn good, cutscenes can be epic, and there are just tons of sidequests and things to do.

Basically, it went like this:
Nintendo: No US release America: HOW DARE YOU, THIS IS THE BEST GAME EVER, I'M IMPORTING AND YOU SUCK! Nintendo: Fine, it's out in the US America: Eh, it's decent.
where are you getting this from
-- Miyamoto: [cats] are kind of like girls. If they come and talk to you it's great. But if you try to talk to them it doesn't always go so well
Board 8, mostly. There was a LOT more enthusiasm for it before it got an American release. Once it was out in the US, it was hardly mentioned at all, and opinion was far more divided when it was.

Not really. While a lot of people who complained about NOA never ended up getting the game, most who did play it loved it. Aside from those who whine about gr4fx
I mean I still love the game despite the flaws graphically but it looks jaggy and the character models are kinda ugly, I just expected it to look better. Looking at The Last Story, I think it does a much better job in that department

There was multiple Xenoblade playthrough topics - and it's hardly "divided", the vast majority still love it. Of course you'll get one or two people going "eh not THAT great" when more people play it because not everybody is going to like everything (and everyone that was interested in it already played the EU release, so the NA release was mostly for people who didn't care as much), and Xenoblade had some HUGE expectations to live off of.
Yeah the response on the Xenoblade board was overwhelmingly positive after the EU release. After the American release some dissenters started to show up.
I haven't played it, but my brother showed me some gameplay and his file, and he walked me through the first bits of the story.
It does start sorta slow, and he told me that it isn't always clear where to go, but the story quickly makes an unexpected turn. Doesn't seem too cliche, other story parts I saw seemed solid. Ignore the graphical quips, it's no worse than a PS2 RPG, and the environments are huge and quite detailed. Specifically character models, each armor/weapon appears in game and in cutscenes, and some of them look fantastic. Some dialogue is kinda corny, and I saw a few parts where plot foreshadowing was so obvious that it detracted from the feel.
Amazing game, I am about halfway through ... I think
It is well on its way to being top 10 all time for me

I feel it's a very graphically impressive game, but not one that holds up up close. At a distance though, it's damn good looking, and not just for a Wii game. Dat draw distance is one of the best I've ever seen, possibly the best.
From: McBonesII | #028 Some dialogue is kinda corny, and I saw a few parts where plot foreshadowing was so obvious that it detracted from the feel. Really? I felt quite the opposite. The game has a lot of foreshadowing, but some is incredibly subtle, of the "I would have never noticed that if I didn't play through it twice" variety.

I should say that my brother had the PAL version, perhaps they changed some dialog for NA release? I just thought it was worth mentioning because the story and setting seemed really fantastic while a few pieces of dialogue were basically saying "there's something here".
From: transcience | #039 Xenoblade is pretty fugly, no denying that Depends on whether you care more about art direction or polygon count, really. I think the former is pretty enough for me to ignore the latter. It's a great, great game and I loved it.
Playing through it right now, I think I'm almost halfway. It's pretty fun so far. The main draw is definitely exploring the huge world and the music's pretty good too. The story is 'ok' so far and I can't say I'm a fan of the battle system, although the game seems really easy so far anyway.
Still playing through it. It's pretty good, but not the 'best RPG ever' kind of game like the hype would lead you to believe. It has better gameplay than FFXII, but the same kind of pacing problems.
