It's like I have Steam in online mode, then want to play it somewhere with no Internet, I try to start in offline mode and it's like "you need an internet connection to do this." No kidding I need an Internet connection why do you think I'm trying to go offline?

Okay yeah, foresight helps most of the time here, cause you can run fine in offline mode if you set it beforehand, but it still seems pretty stupid that you need an Internet connection to turn offline mode on.

Yeah I just dissed lord VALVE's product design what are you gonna do about it. (seriously is there any legitimate reason for this beyond poor design choices?)

I just leave it in offline unless I have a reason to go online, really...

I'm the opposite. Mostly cause it asks to go online half the time anyway with updates and such. I guess achievements are kinda neat too. And it's usually fine but sometimes I forget to set it to offline in advance when I want to use it and "whoops"

augh, glad I use Direct2Drive/GameFly, Amazon, etc. Also, I am glad Minecraft is actually sensible with its offline mode!

I wasn't aware it did this -- every time I start up my laptop at a place where I don't have an Internet connection, it asks me if I want to start it in offline mode.

That's the norm, but if there's an update you may get screwed over. But you can force it to not even start online mode permanently.
