That was... actually an extremely fair and balanced assessment of the issue. Up to and including the concerns over creator intention, which are particularly relevant for the Smash series (SAKURAIIIII). I also enjoyed the anti-Brawl bit at the end. Fun stuff.

The problem is they don't really weight the points. "Stages that are about platforming more than fighting" vs "you can turn them off" and "items" vs "you can turn them off" are not points that balance out.

I mean I don't really care about the debate but yeah. Just because the "is a fighting game" half had more bullet points on it doesn't necessarily mean it should win the debate or whatever. Fighterpedia has this problem with all of their videos I've seen actually.

Every time I see a discussion about competitive Smash Bros, I always wonder when we'll finally get competitive Mario Party. I'd watch the hell out of that if only because of how ridiculous it would be.

I find the like/dislike ratio funny, and I don't understand why people are so uppity about this. The genre of "fighting game" is not some lofty pedestal, folks. It's like the "art" debate on a much stupider level, which is saying something, because that's a pretty stupid debate.

when they mentioned creator intent I hop they also mentioned Ono and SFxT and how tournaments are banning gems altogether because the game as shipped is unplayable at a competitive level!

The only reason gems were banned is because of logistics with time though. If they had more time, several TOs said they would have kept them unbanned (besides paid DLC gems).

Is it just me, or are pretty much all of their counterpoints also relevant to Power Stone? (Barring perhaps creator intent).

They also didn't have a bullet point on the 2-player vs 4-player, which seems relevant. To me, 1v1 smash is a very different experience from 4-way smash.

It honestly saddens me that people care so much about this "issue".

The creator's intent argument is a good point...but so is the SF2 counterpoint.

I think the community argument is the best thing going for it, though. My life doesn't really change whether or not Smash is a fighting game, but the fact that the community continues to exist as strongly as it does (even if it is kind of s***ty) makes me okay with calling it a fighting game.

Eh the community argument just means it's a competitive game with a scene as Phase said. Most of the points in that video for it being a Fighting game apply to stuff like Starcraft and Warcraft and Call of Duty as much as Smash which is my main problem with the presentation of the video. It has 8 to 4 on points but I'd consider the 4 points to be a lot stronger actually.

I find the creator's intent argument to be a bit wishy washy, in my opinion.

I mean, just looking at the two examples, they have absolutely nothing in common. SFII was always intended to be a game centered on competition. Combos were a happy accident, true, but that has nothing to do with the Smash community taking a game that Sakurai and Nintendo have been trying to distance from the FGC since Melee came out and attempting to jam the square peg into the round hole. A more apt comparison would be wavedashing vs combos, but that doesn't really have a hell of a lot to do with the question.
