Right? Dead Cell aren't as good as Foxhound or even the Cobras...the cutscenes go on and on...Big Boss, Snake and Old Snake > Raiden (though I like Raiden)...and yet it's just better than MGS3. And I can't put my finger on why.

I know this is an unpopular opinion here, but MGS1 is the best of the series, despite having the worst gameplay (due only to its PS1 status). I, personally, enjoy having characters whom I actually care about and am invested in. You can say that about all of FOXHOUND (well, not Octopus) and most of Snake's CODEC, plus Snake himself, but in MGS2, it's like... don't even pretend that Fatman or Fortune are interesting at all, or that Solidus isn't the dumbest main villain of the series, or that you don't want to just punch Rose in the face every time she speaks.

MGS2 is still a 10/10 game, though.

No, MGS2 really isn't a 10/10 game, and those things you listed are the exact reason it isn't. That and the terrible trainwreck of a plot. Easily the worst.

Full disclosure here, I've only gotten the Meryl ending of MGS1 once. I can't do Ocelot's torture session, I don't know how I managed it the first time.

Meryl ending isn't too hard to get. Anyways, MGS2 is my favorite and I know it's kind of an unpopular opinion. I feel the gameplay and controls are REALLY smooth and fluid. MGS1, while it's not terrible as some people think, isn't exactly fluid. MGS3's a bit too clunky due to backpack and camo. I really do not like MGS4's gameplay, it feels way too over the place and there's way too little of it. MGS2 is just very smooth and I felt very "in-control". Plus, I just really like a lot of the easter eggs and just being able to mess around with the Big Shell. And flying cartwheels, man, totally more stylish than rolling.

Gotta say that I really loved the plot and Arsenal Gear, but I could very easily see why others wouldn't like it. MGS1 and MGS3 kind of tie for second, constantly flipping back and forth. I think right now, I have it as MGS2 > MGS1 > MGS3 >>>> MGS4.

Yeah, MGS2 is my favorite out of 1/2/3, and that mostly stems from how polished the gameplay is.

I still haven't been able to decide a favorite out of the MGS games. Every time I think I've pegged it, I come up with a reason I like one of the others just as much.
