What is IP again?
IP is the other kind of points you earn when you play matches. You earn both XP and IP and IP are the points that you use to purchase runes and champions. Yes, that’s right, you have to "buy" the champions, but you get the points for free so its not a bad deal. (You can also spend real money on champion packs if you would rather not take the time to earn them) The point is that you get the IP for free so you should figure out which champions you are good with and spend it on those. When you buy a champion you will have it unlocked on your account forever. And if you don't buy ANY champions, you will still have access to 10 of them. Every week there are 10 "free" champions. But they are only free for the week and 10 different champions will be free the next week. And so if you are level 1 you still have 10 champions available to you and so try them out, figure out which one you might like to spend points on and then buy it.

And so IP is good for Champions and Runes. You can also spend *real money* to unlock champions but you can NOT unlock runes with real money, only IP and so runes have to be earned.

To sum up:
You have an account that goes up to level 30 (this is your summoner level)
You earn XP (to level up the account) and IP (to buy champions/runes) every time you play a match
You have rune pages (with up to 30 slots)
You have a mastery page to spec (with up to 30 points) (and you can respec as much as you want)

This is probably a bit over-kill and so if something doesn’t quite make sense just ask and someone will clarify. And if you are going to start playing please post:
(1) Your GameFAQs name
(2) Your Summoner name (this is different than your log-in name)
(3) Your preferred champions. It’s just nice to know which champions people prefer to play or use the most.

And please BOLD THE INFORMATION so we will see it and update the list accordingly. Or, you know, add it yourself.

What is League of Legends?
League of Legends is a team game very similar to the WarCraft 3 custom map DotA. There are two bases, one on either side of the map and several "lanes" between the bases along which AI controlled units spawn. An overhead view of the 5v5 map looks about like this:


There is a base in the bottom left, and a base in the top right. 3 lanes connect the two bases and every 30 seconds AI controlled "minions" spawn in each lane. Everyone who is in the game controls 1 "champion" unit and your job as a team is to push your lanes and destroy the opposing base. The lanes are protected by turrets and so you need your own minions along side you to be able to kill the turrets without getting targeted by them. 2 bases, 3 lanes, 5 players per team. There is also The Crystal Scar, the map currently used for the Dominion game mode. The Dominion overhead view looks like this:



What are Champions?
Champions are the powerful units that you get to control. You pick 1 before the map loads and that is the champion you will use for that match. Champions start each match at level 1 their max level is 18. The important thing to consider is the stats of the champion you select will be affected by the level of your account.

What do 'account-levels' have to do with anything?
When you create an account you have a level 1 account. That is called your 'Summoner Level'. You are the summoner, and the champion you select for the match is the 'summoned'. You increase your summoner level by playing matches. Every match you play will earn you XP and IP. Earning enough XP will increase your summoner level with the max level being 30. Wins are worth more XP/IP than losses, so try to win. Your summoner level also determines:
(1) How many runes you can slot and
(2) How many mastery points you can allot

If you are low leveled still and playing by yourself then the game will try and pair you against similarly leveled opponents, but if you are playing with higher leveled friends then it will seek higher leveled opponents. Just something to consider when you start learning how to play.

Even if ALL it was was an item where you combine Chalice + AP and got a reasonable amount of AP per cost it would STILL be amazing.

But the fact that you get good AP cost and then SO MUCH MORE just puts it way over the top.

What do you think about Athenes becoming core on most casters?

It provides an alternative to Abyssal Scepter. I feel like Void Staff was pretty much always a better choice than Abyssal, but I would grab the Abyssal as well for the MR. Grail provides MR, as well as very strong CDR and damn good AP.

It will certainly be core on champs like Anivia and Swain, and maybe even peeps like Karthus. And it also has great endgame potential for most other casters.

With most AP's, if I want CDR, I'll grab an early Kages and turn it into DFG later. With its nerf, I don't really see any reason to get it over Athenes unless you're having a really tough time getting gold (also, champs that are mad burst like Veigar and LB probably will stick with the DFG).


The way I see it, you build an early Chalice (which helps with mana and MR in lane), then finish your core build. Then you finish Grail, unless you need a Zhonyas or something.

It'll definitely be nice for most. I'm excited for buffed Haunting Guise, though. AP + MPen + MS? Lux will be untouchable.

I'd say almost every caster aside from like support Soraka and Ryze that I've ever played was pretty mana intensive.

It gives players the option of rushing Athene's and becoming spam-happy. Even if some catsers aren't super mana-intensive (I'm thinking Ziggs), they would LOVE to have essentially a permanent blue buff. If Ziggs had no mana to worry about (which he really doesn't have a big mana issue if he's played smart anyway), it would just be bombs everywhere without even giving a crap, and I think that's what I plan to do. You can build yourself a blue buff without sacrificing too much AP.

I never run into mana issues with most casters I use. Not enough that that item is core, anyway. Like I could see getting it on Anivia, Karthus, and Swain certainly with their sustained abilities. Maybe Sona, Janna, Heimerdinger cause they can spam all their abilities a lot in poking teamfight situations. But I probably wouldn't use it on Lux (mana rarely seems an issue with her cooldowns), Leblanc (low mana costs/can't poke), Evelynn (low mana costs), Fiddlesticks (can't really spam his abilities), Orianna (low mana costs despite great poking), Xerath (see ori)-- could go on.

Yeah basically what I'm saying is a lot of ap champs have high enough cooldowns or low enough mana costs that mana is not a big deal. In laning it's a big deal because you're basically in a prolonged pokefest at all times even if you're not a champ with great pokes (which is why you give mid blue so often) but by the time you finish that thing lane is almost done. Has significantly less use in team fights. Keep in mind that Rod of Ages will functionally solve any mana problems most champs have for about the same price and give 800 hp which is generally going to be more useful than 40 mr for survivability.

It's a good item and very viable but it's not going to be another rabadon's deathcap or anything.

Maybe my perception is skewed given my love for mp regen/level runes though.

We're talking about DFG, Chalice, Tear, Morello's, and so on, but what about Lich Bane? It's very similar to Athene's with the AP, MR, and gives flat Mana instead of MRegen. I know LB is better for auto-attacking AP champs (Fizz, Nidalee, and uhhhh I dunno who else it's that great on), but I feel like Athene's outclasses LB, in addition to those other AP items.

And I agree with Lopen, I feel that RoA has much better late-game attributes than Athene's.

I don't really think Lich Bane is similar at all. I mean yeah if you compare the statlines they look that way but the AP/MR/Mana are the 3 lowest priorities on the item. All about that passive and the movespeed is probably the #2 for most characters that use it. The AP is good just because it's AP but the mana and mr might as well not be there most of the time because if those are your priorities there are much better sources for it.

It sounds like instead of a 5-win IP boost they're just giving flat IP instead. I think overall it amounts to less IP, but it's instant which is nice. And at 5 friends you get a free rune page? Yeah I'm switching over.

Oh wait, of the 4 people I've referred only 2 have hit 10. >_>

Bio's method (and his work with that method) are probably paying off now, though. A single rune page is worth 6300 IP, and only takes 5 friends to hit 10.

My method is actually really tedious now. The amount of time to level to 10 takes a lot longer than you'd think.

It's more efficient to do it the old fashioned way: convincing your friends to play.

EXP requirements to level up increase exponentially between 5 and 10.

You could level several accounts to 5 before you hit 10 on one of them.
