Artest is fascinating. he's totally normal most of the time but every once in a while his mind just goes somewhere else and he's totally unconscious of what he's doing. when he gets that deer-in-the-headlights look in his eyes, he will do absolutely anything.

I believe him when he says that he didn't mean to hit Harden like that. he was just caught up in the moment, saw someone and just destroyed him. Artest doesn't realize what he's doing when that stuff happens. check out his reaction when the ref tells him he's been ejected. he's totally oblivious.

that said, he needs to be punished. you can't judge intent, only actions.

Looking at his face I would say Artest isnt even aware of what he was doing at the time. whether he meant to do it or not I could never say just because...well its ron artest and nobody knows what is actually running through that head of his. He is absolutely going to get suspended and deservedly so, but from the wind up to the follow through I dont think it ever clicked in his head what he was actually doing.

Just from the clip, he didn't have any reason to single Harden out...but when you feel taps on your shoulder before slinging your elbow AND don't immediately react to feeling your elbow rock somebody's world, suspicion is warranted.

That, along with Artest (I'm not saying his silly name) having a unique history of violence within the NBA, keeps me from giving him much benefit of the doubt when his best excuse is that he was too busy bragging.
