It makes me sad that Puzzle Fighter is so obscure that Dominion is the marketing pitch for this game... on a video games based message board.

That being said I like both so I might look into this.

Puzzle Strike is a deck-builder that is themed off of a puzzle game, specifically Puzzle Fighter. Similar to Dominion, you buy chips (the game uses chips instead of cards) that make up your "deck," and you try to cause your opponent's board to fill up with Gems before your own does.

It's similar to Dominion in that they're both deck-builders, but the game has many differences that affect how the game is played. For one, you play as a character and each character has 3 unique chips that start in their bag. These give each character different strengths and weaknesses, so the game ends up being asymmetric as opposed to Dominion where the strongest strategy is frequently the same for both players. Also, the game has much more player interaction since instead of gathering victory points you're actively trying to eliminate the other player. This results in games where you really have to adapt to your opponent's buys and the game is generally quite interesting.

Puzzle Strike is developed by David Sirlin, the guy who balanced Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix (... what a name). You can play the game for free on the website below (and also read up on the game). If you end up liking it, there's a Kickstarter going on where you can buy the latest version of the base set, as well as the expansion that's in the works. You can also play Yomi on the website too, which is a card game that simulates a fighting game.

I figured the game is more like Dominion that Puzzle Fighter so that would be the hook for most people.

Though yeah, Puzzle Fighter is definitely one of my favorite puzzle games. Tetris Attack gets kinda silly in good multiplayer matches (both players can chain for obscene amounts of time) and Puyo Puyo matches tend to end extremely quickly. Good fun.

The game is hard to learn. I think I lost to bots about 3-4 times before I finally won a match, and the first human I played stomped me. I can already appreciate how many different strategies there are though.

This guy's blog is really interesting too. Just spent a good 30 minutes looking through a few articles and I have a bunch of tabs open for more articles I want to read... I love game design.

also check out Yomi on the same site, it's a card game that plays kind of like a fighting game. In fact originally it was going to use Street Fighter characters but Capcom all of a sudden said no even though they had previously given permission.

Scumbag Capcom. This is kind of odd considering that a Resident Evil deckbuilding game recently came out.

That's a real shame. I think the games would be more successful if that were the case. Oh well... still fun for us.

Got my first few wins against humans just now.

Rook seems to be the easier free character to play. Just try to go for an early win. Get two Combines and two Crashes in your deck and try to keep it small. Buy puzzle chips that let you trash things and ones that give you extra arrows (e.g. Button Mashing).

Valerie has been a lot harder for me to do well with. I think I'm still just really bad at playing an economy strategy so I get in serious trouble with her once the game gets going. If I don't win early on then I get screwed since my opponent has a far more efficient deck. Oof.

Well it's all popular enough that Sirlin got a $15,000 kickstarter for a Puzzle Strike revision and expansion funded in only one or two days, so he's probably satisfied. Having to make his own characters is probably beneficial at this point too since he can reuse them in new games, which can help sales as people want to buy more things in that franchise.

Pretty much everyone that's into Dominion thinks Alchemy is bad. I mean, it could be worse, but it just makes things awkward unless you use too many Alchemy cards.

I like Alchemy, but only online where everything is automated. Alchemy is clunky to play in real life, especially Golem. Sometimes even online the cards do get a little ridiculous, though.

Edit: Except Possession. Possession is a f***ing godawful card that should never be played. Everything else in Alchemy is fine.

Alchemy is less clunky to play IRL than I had expected. I don't have a problem with it, although yeah, Possession's not my favorite.

I think my biggest problem with alchemy is the potions in general. I like the idea of them but unless you have a few Alchemy cards, it's almost not worth it to have them in there. I like playing pure randoms, so it's almost either exclude Alchemy, or use at least half Alchemy, so I'd rather just use no Alchemy. I also think Philosopher's Stone and, of course Possession are the most annoying cards in the game, though I suppose Philosopher's Stone probably isn't so bad online.

I don't find Philosopher's Stone that annoying at all IRL. I expected to, but it hasn't been THAT bad.

And yeah, just one Potion is kinda lame, but I feel like it's okay if you have two or three. Then again I usually play Veto when I play in person.

Alchemy is the only set I don't own... but I almost want it just for Apprentice. It's kind of sad that the most fun card of the set doesn't even use potions.

I haven't tried Puzzle Strike yet, but Yomi is a great game. A couple friends and I each bought a character set and it's a great pick up game everyone once in a while.

That's WHY it's the best in the set.

Yeah, I'm tempted to pick up Yomi and/or Puzzle Strike (through the Kickstarter). Yomi is $100 for the whole set though (I'm a completionist -- though I guess I could just buy two characters and sell them if I bought the whole thing), and Puzzle Strike isn't cheap either, and I dunno anyone who I can be sure would like the games. Most of my game collection has been cheaper games, and it's hard to justify dropping that much on one game.
